What car?
Refer also BigApe's comment - at the end the car has to be very special to justify the effort and cost.
Boats are cheaper here than UK, with the current economic climate they are getting even cheaper day by day

Two websites for you to look at:
http://www.customs.gov.au/site/page.cfm?u=4371
http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roa...les/index.aspx
Then for shipping costings:
http://www.australiatrade.com.au/Shi...s/Costings.htm
http://www.karmanshipping.com/australia/australia.html
Many people decide not to bother...

Re: CAR AND BOAT IMPORTATION CAN ANY ONE HELP
I worked in shipping years ago & the rules of thumb then were
1. If it's not a top end or specialist car forget it
2. How much would you get if you sold it here? Add that to the cost of shipping, import duties etc and take that away from the cost of buying out there. Remember to take into account exchange rates, do the sums add up?
3. If they don't have a dealership & can't get prices then chances are the repair bills for it would be astronomical, unless of course you can do it yourself!
Another tip for cars (sweeping statement coming up) is that they tend to be in better condition for their relative age in Australia than in the UK.

Hey, what about taking cars back from Oz to the UK, though? Does it make any sense seeing as it's tax-free (if owned for 12 months+ etc etc)?
Obviously I would only be thinking about it for a good car I already owned, in good condition, sold in the UK (in similar format) already etc...

Nowadays things have changed & you can ship a car in yourself from Europe cheaper than you can buy it here so that may actually be a viable option but really wouldn't know where to point you in the right direction. What about calling one of the removal companies in Oz & asking them whether they feel it is worth doing? Would be an interesting exercise if no one can offer any further info.

Thanks, Stepbeanie. Yes, if you were sitting in the UK already, it probably wouldn't make financial sense to import a car from Oz unless you *really* wanted a ute or were one of the guys that buys rust-free Morris Minors or something. But if I were moving back to the UK, and I already had a car in decent nick that I liked (and had coughed all the depreciation on) and was analogous to a UK-issue car, and there was a model report for SVA testing, then I can't see why it wouldn't make sense to import it back to the UK. But I am a few years away from that (if ever) so I am not going to get my knickers in a bunch about it for a while.
Naah, if it's your car that used abroad and you don't want to sell it for a while, it's just like household goods - duty/tax-free upon immigrating to the UK.
I looked it up just to check:
" * you are moving your normal home to the UK
* you have had your normal home outside the EU for a continuous period of at least 12 months
* you have possessed and used the vehicle for at least six months outside the EU
* you didn't get the vehicle under a duty/tax-free scheme
* you're going to keep the vehicle for your personal use for at least 12 months after it's imported"

The Australian tax regime is designed to prop up a pisspoor and overpriced car industry? Generally speaking, VAT isn't payable in the UK on stuff that's already been used.
