Well, they are quite different places. Christchurch is bigger, better connected/ more centrally located which makes (say) the car journey to Wellington quite do-able in a day but from Dunners the extra 4-5 hours would be a killer. Worth doing a search on Christchurch amenities and things to do.
Dunedin: 120000 incl a big university with 20000 students. NZ's former capital in gold rush years and with plenty of grand old stone buildings and cathedrals/ churches etc (you don't find that so much elsewhere in NZ). Gateway to some beautiful unspoilt country, the Catlins, the wildlife on the Otago Peninsula. Climate a bit cooler and damper (though both are excellent places for the garden!). Certainly more isolated but not a Hicksville - all the modern facilities you could want.

I went to find out about train times at Christchurch station today and found out that they dont run trains from ch.ch to Dunedin ... was amazed. I was thinking it would be a good way to travel to Dunedin as we havent been there yet to check it out. The houses are cheaper in Dunedin Ive heard, so if you want more for your money you might be better off there.

in a recent edition of property investor it said prices now were comparable between Dunners and CHCH,like for like, but i question wether that is actually correct!Dunners does seem fractionally cheaper.
Dunedin everytime thanks, considerably better climate(more varid)far less polution and smog, friendlier people, closer to the most beautiful spots and a far prettier place(imo)

Also depends on if you want to live a commutable distance to the central city area but still out in the country?
Don't know Dunedun but I hear good reports. Maybe consider it from a different angle, e.g. the better job. I am sure will will find either place nice...

Thanks people, for your response.
You have given me something to think about.
And Yes I did mean Canterbury - Christchurch.
Have another job in the pipeline in Wellington. Hummm.

Also, the smog dedee talks about is easily avoidable by not living in the bowl of christchurch. We live way over past the 'Port-Hills' on the Peninsula and still commutable to ChCh. Well as a brit anyway. Don't think kiwis would necessarily do it???
The smog is caused by log/wood burners being the main heating meathod and the fumes just can't escape as there are mountaines all around the plain that is canterbury.
