Canberra what is it like?

We have the opportunity to get a 457 visa for Canberra can anybody let us know what its really like?

We will only be able to go with about £2000 is this possible, and as my daughter is 11 can any one suggest an area to look at for accommodation where the state schools are good?

Hi one thing to be aware of is that if you are on a 457 visa then you have to pay for state schools in some states. We live in NSW and the charge there is around $5000 per child. Definately worth checking out if you are coming out with £2000.

Cheers

Thata a very good point because its basically 'all' of your money. You can however apply to an exemption if you can show that you cant afford it. You can get an application form from the school for this (although they're sometimes reluctant to hand them over!). We didnt apply for it but quite a few friends of ours did and didnt have to pay.

Sorry cant help you with Canberra :)

Hi,
My sister and family live in Hughes in Canberra. The kids love the local schools and my niece heads off to the state high school in January. Sister loves the area.

Hughes is a nice area

OP - I will reply to your pm later if that is ok?

I am not sure if the state schools charge - we have PR so it is a bit different - bust as I am an ex teacher - I will ask a few friends about school fees.
