I wasn't suggesting that it is a good idea to look for a house before you are here, this was what we did when we arrived. Sydney rental market is pretty competitive too, so it is about finding a competitive edge.
My husband viewed loads of houses without me and I didn't see the one he took until after he paid the bond! But it is nice, I saw it yesterday. Phew. |

Re: Canberra Accomodation
Hmmm... A long shot I know, but anyone want to trade the use of their house in Canberra (preferably Inner North) for the use of mine in West London?

Have you considered that things might all fall into place for you and everything could be plane sailing?! The joy of migration - you just never know how things will work out. Know its easy to say but try not to worry, what will be will be and at the moment you can't change the outcome so you might as well enjoy your last few weeks in the UK |

Maybe it's time to just chill and go with the flow. Thanks :) |
Re: Canberra Accomodation
Would that I could! Although we arent in the LHS catchment (Ainslie) and our kitchen is still under construction (DH is DIY-ing - is there a record for the slowest kitchen reno in the Guinness book of records do you think?). I will keep an eye out for you though - I do have a friend with an investment property in Lyneham, I will suss out what her tenant's situation is - probably nothing to get your hopes up but you never know.

There was nothing that worried me more about this whole move than getting the rental, especially as I have two cats. We did seem some duff ones but with a touch of organisation and dedication of time it did not prove to be the challenge I thought it would be. I didn't think the cats were quite as big a problems as the forums would have you believe (only 2 out of 10 or 15 said no); the open houses were not as crowded as I thought they would be and the landlords were not anal about the points and references, in fact the ones we spoke to said there was such a thing as common sense and understood that people relocating might not have these things. The only thing I would recommend is that you (Mrs Paulry rather) keeps an open mind about location. We were very firmly set on one location before we arrived but there was nothing suitbale there at that point in time. So we happily expanded our search as we know there is not only one decent neighbourhood around Sydney. |

Re: Canberra Accomodation
Unfortunately, as the OP knows, the school they have earmarked is very rigid on out of area enrolments so they will be restricted to a few suburbs. Canberra isnt Sydney either - the market here is very tight indeed as everyone who has tried to find a place here has found and they will unfortunately be arriving at just the wrong time of year. I am sure things will all pan out OK for them in the end but if there are restrictions on where you will want to find accommodation because of other factors then looking in different places isnt going to help.

I've just been going through the list of "to do" items and there are now relatively few things left to arrange - It's mostly just the leisure stuff for our en-route trip in South Africa remaining  |
