Re: Canberra
As good a place as any to come to!
Lovely views from anywhere in town, lots of nice green (usually) open spaces, modern buildings (pros and cons to that), very little traffic (comparatively), housing prices lower than Sydney and Melbourne even close in to the city centre/s. Weather is amongst the best in Aus - we have 4 seasons so you get the nice variety and even if winter is cold, the sky is always blue and the day warms up - quite big temperature ranges. Lots of facilities for all sorts of things - at one stage we had more Olympic pools than the entire UK (and may still do for all I know). You can get a mean cup of coffee al fresco and restaurants are top class. People will tell you that there is no life here but that is b*llocks, there is plenty to do and lots of opportunities to get involved in things. We ae a couple of hours from some excellent beaches and a similar distance from some top class snow fields. Bottom line is that it is more like a country town than a major city (300,000 pop) but quite a sophisticated and modern country town. |

I have been here 12 years and wouldnt want to live anywhere else. Good luck with the move Barney:thumbup: |

It's always possible to come up with negatives and Canberra does have a few. It's not as culturally diverse as Sydney or Melbourne and there are no ethnic ghettos to speak of. For instance, I quite enjoy going to somewhere like Leichardt in Sydney where you can soak up some Italian ambiance. O the plus side, its easy to get away to Sydney for a weekend. Many things are expensive here - there isn't as much competition as in the big cities and there's a severe shortage of tradesmen of all description. However, all things considered, I think Canberra provides a quality of life for the majority of its residents that is second to none, not only in Australia, but anywhere on the planet. |

For a city of 300,000 it has a lot going on. However, you can hardly compare it to Sydney or Melbourne, let alone London of New York. It's not in the same league and how could it be? I think you need a reality check.

Im putting the point that even for a small city Canberra has a lot of events on. every week there is events on, and the City stage's very important cultural events that only Canberra can stage like. The Apologiae to the Stolen gerenation. maybe you need the reality check. |

Well that wasn't exactly your original point. You said "there is so much going on its mind blowing". My point is that you are exagerrating a bit. It might be mind blowing what's going on in London and New York, but not Canberra. By the way, I have been to Manuka - many times. Very nice place with a good vibe - all one block of it. ;)
http://www.canberraeguide.com/ I have not said that Canberra has more going on than a city in another county like London. Thats what you have posted. I have given web links and and inportant points of fact. Im sure a neutral poster or member reading thought the posts will see this. As for Manuka size doesn't matter its about quality, than again Americans dont understand that do they? Its all about ego's and size. ;) |

Its all out ego's and size. ;) Give me a break Pomref, I think you can find plenty of quality cultural experiences in New York too. I don't know why you feel compelled to make sweeping negative generalisations about Americans. :frown: |
Re: Canberra

Re: Canberra
Many would agree that Canberra is different! It's what appeals.
It's not like Sydney or Melbourne, or anywhere else for that matter! I love its diversity - the people, places, environment, restaurants, festivals etc etc. If you like a combination of country and city you will find it here. Canberra is very young - 80 years old? So come and contribute to its unique style and sense of worth as the nation's capital (who said it was Sydney - naughty, naughty!) |
