Supposedly they can....but my local police wouldn't as they said they didn't know me! I guess it helps to have a few convictions!! (I had to use my GP to do mine)

the stipulations for an aussie passport ( i would think the same applies ) is that a policeman IS a valid person to certify your documents, however, he/she MUST be currently in that job and have at least 5 years continuous service.
Also ( as if that wasn't enough ) they should have known you for the last 12 months.

Cannot guarantee the same applies for yourself but the list for passports includes..........Accountants,judges,teachers( always a handy one to know ) etc.( pretty comprehensive list ).
Hope this helps, if you cannot go via the policeperson i would be happy to run-off the full list.

Paul

Further to Alan's answer, my document copies were certified in the UK by a teacher and my statutory decs were signed by a solicitor.

I'm sure I saved a few quid by getting someone other than a solicitor to certify the copies of my documents.

I've been granted a visa without any problem.

Our documents were certified by a police officer and they were accepted with no problems.
