Can the last one to leave the UK Please turn out the lights?
Went to the Emigrate 2003 expo on saturday at Sandown park.
Very useful, got some good info particularly about pensions, removals and taking the dogs.
But what struck me the most were the crowds, ok there were people there looking at europe and the americas but it was the oz and nz stands that were packed and the 'Migrate to Australia' seminar was fully booked by 10am.
I don't know what the attendance figures were but the exhibitors that I asked all said that it was at least twice as busy as last year and the car park seemed to be pretty close to capacity.
Beginning to look in the mirror to see if I'm growing whiskers and a long tail.

No hopers need a utopia to believe in and thanks to Aussies soaps this is it , a land where the sunshines everyday and all are happy little souls .
Does make you think why these near do wells think that Australia wants them , is it because no one else does?

He is now on a waiting list to have the surgery in a public hospital.
The Australian Consumers Association ("No escape from health fund hell as cover soars", Herald, March 15-16) states that Australians are locked into health insurance they can't afford to leave. It seems they are also locked into health insurance they can't afford to use.

How reliable is private health insurance really - In my experience I think they are all a bunch of crooks - do not pay up when you really need them. Is it worth paying hefty premiums for nothing?? I am not sure but how are the insurance companies in Aus?? Is there any consumer protrction at all??

The dental cover is a must the thing is with full cover you get sorted faster than the medicare which means you have less time off work , which in most cases will only give you 2 weeks a year sick pay.

I bet the organisers of this event, had sponsored all the sunny episodes of Neighours, to be shown the previous month. Documentaries with names like "Bask in the Sun with no worries mate" were on instead of the News and the Underground had 3 million posters of wombats stuck everywhere. Steve Irwin was also shipped over to do a strip gig, Oh and paradise beach for the blokes.
I guess this means this website will now encounter, lots of English hopefulls carrying rubber rings, sunhats and deckchairs, lining up for their fantasy life in the sun.
Lets hope Pommie B, does not take a stall at next years exhibition.

I always think ladies partaking in the Sake before lunch is a bad idea. If you must drink so early in the day, try having a couple of spring rolls with it.
Perhaps you could invite Pommie Sheila & myself to one of your Sake bashes, we are in dire need of some cultural experiences.

Shall we all avert our eyes from the quarter of a million Ozzies in London alone? In my daughters school there's almost as many Ozzies teachers as brits...good one as well...glad to see the Ozzie goverment is paying to educate all these future teachers back in blighty!

Yep, absolutely...but I was just trying to point out that immigration is a two-way thing, and as much as it might irritate certain people on this site, lots of people also come to the UK. . Funnily enough you also hear comments about 'will the last one please turn out the lights' in canada/NZ/even OZ as a lot of young people go overseas to make their money, whether it be in UK/OZ or especially US of course.
By the way, I'm sure this post will be immediately picked apart by the usual three or four doomsters, who hate hearing anything positive about the UK....funny really that these are the same people who complain that others simply write negatives about their time in Oz. As I said on another thread...these things cut both ways.

What you quote in terms of teachers wages aplies to many jobs in Australia , the Aussies come to the UK to earn good wages and jobs are easy to get unlike Australia.
The cost of living is upto you we all can can live beyond our means , but the thing that counts is what you bank every week .
The only way to make a half liveable wage in Australia is to be self employed which allows you to rip off the taxman the down side of this is the PAYE mugs get hammered with high taxes.

If you are over 50, "salary sacrifice" into superannuation can drastically cut your tax rate. Under 50 with kids it makes little difference as a PAYE tax payer; you are slugged between the eyes on taxes.
