Default Can I Work ?

Will I be able to start working as soon as we arrive in Australia, or do I need to be licenced?

I am a carpenter by trade but have heard that although they accept our qualifications for immigration, they dont recoginise them for actuall working

I´m not a tradesman so I cant really talk abou it specifically, but I think that it is unlikely that Australia Governmet will accept any qualification for migration only to stop you from working later on.

Good luck anyway...

I'm not a tradesman either, but I have the feeling that you do need a licence before you can work.

What part of OZ are you coming to ?

It will be worth checking with the state department that covers such things eg: Queensland

Info I obtained:

"A BSA licence is not required if you are employed on wages as an employee, if you are engaged as a sub-contractor to a contractor performing work of the same kind (eg a carpenter sub-contracting to another carpenter) or if the value of work that you do per job does not exceed a value of $1100 labour and materials.

For all other contracting of building work a BSA licence is required as explained at http://www.bsa.qld.gov.au/scripts/factsheet.exe?id=1. Details of the requirements to qualify for a Carpentry Licence can be found at http://www.bsa.qld.gov.au/scripts/classes.exe?id=144.

You will also need to obtain trade recognition of your UK trade papers, if held. Details of how to do this can be found on the Skills Recognition website at http://www.training.qld.gov.au/skill...ot.htm?select. If you do not hold trade papers you will need to undergo a skills assessment. The Registered Training Organisations that undertake assessments can be found at http://www.bsa.qld.gov.au/pdf/84.pdf.

Further information on applying for a licence can be found at http://www.bsa.qld.gov.au/scripts/factsheet.exe?id=3 and licence applications can be downloaded from http://www.bsa.qld.gov.au/licenceapp/individual/.

Licence applications are currently taking approximately 6 weeks to process.

Kind regards

Customer Service Officer"
