Also, anybody know any decent spice shops? Coles don't have cumin seeds.

Take a trip to Balaclava Street, Wooloongabba, where you will find an excellent Indian food shop selling all spices (including allspice) at a fraction of the cost of Coles.

Masterfoods ground cumin seed 25g $2.15

http://www.fooddirect.com.au/fooddirect.asp (online shopping for us in the Brisbane area) .
I'm sure coles and woolworths sell it here, (well they should if it's Masterfoods spices) never bought it myself, but will check next time in my local woolworths... anyway if your desperate, that above online food shop delivers to Brisbane addresses

How often do you get down to Capalaba ? There is one very near my favourite meat shop
And they have just moved into a larger shop in the complex, must mean they are getting bigger. Every time I walked past it, all I could smell was India ! (the spices)

also look at page 1044 of the 2004 Brisbane yellow pages:
Food Delicacies.

Never! Its about an hours drive from here.

Perhaps its just our local Coles that don't have it Ceri. They have cumin, but not cumin seeds. Fooddirect don't deliver out here.

I'll try going to Woolongabba, sometime Jayr, thanks.

There's a deli in Rosalie, which sold mace, when I couldn't find it anywhere else. They'll probably have them. Gives me an excuse to eat in one of the yummy pavement cafes while I'm there.

Psst that's a secret. If DIMIA learns about this they will ban my entry on grounds on bio-hazard.

BTW I would be landing in Sydney. I am sure you can visit us there.

Personally I reckon I just can't get the taste of the right blend of fresh spices when I cook. I'm not after something fiery just that great mixture of flavours. <dopiazza mmmm.... drool>
My wife who shares my passion of great food and helps me cook that great supper. Someone in the previous post mentioned the tandoori dishes as some fiery bright dyed toxic food being served in the UK. Sad turn of things for culinary lovers.

Actually the golden yellow color comes from saffron blended with cream coated on the meat during marination. No need for any artificial food grade color at all. All the color an authentic Indian Curry needs comes from pure spices one uses.

The blend of spices suited to most palates is not hard to conjure but for a most satisfying gourmet experience you have to do your own thing. Check out the various dishes and with varying degrees of blend before you can attain Nirvana

Hiya Gordon,

I'm quite lucky like you that my wife in my case can coock a good Chicken Tika Nasala, very red, but just from the spices.

My wife loves me taking her out for meals and then seeing if we can work out how it's done. (Or maybe she just likes me taking her out & paying )

Bye
Mark

Whilst not being a curry expert (apart from I know what I like), I have picked up a few basics for instance the aloo bit in vindaloo means potato.

Most australian vindaloo's I have experienced dont have potato in them!

Try asking for an onion bargi here, you generally get a blank look!

Alas, long gone are the days when you went to the pub for several too many beers then on to the indian, and ensured a firey curry by insulting the waiter!

I'll have to remember that place McMercer!

Beats my normal option which is to fly back to the UK for a curry (plus a decent pint of warm flat beer (Stonehenge Breweries Summer Lightning is to die for!).

By the way I actually do this: work pays luckily!

It's very comforting to know I'm not the only one with a curry "problem".

Back in the UK I once had the following conversation with H.

Friday evening back home after working away for the week.......

H "Shall I do some chops for dinner?"

Me " Whaaaa? It's Friday!!"

H " Annnnd?"

Me <defiant voice> "Friday is curry night!"

H "Well I though we'd have a change"

Me <firm> "It's FRIDAY!"

H " You've eaten out all week at curry houses in Ispwich, I though you'd like something hopme cooked"

Me <whimpering> "But, But"

H "No buts, you've got a real problem"

Me <quiet pathetic resigned voice> "Can I have some lime pickle with it??"

I'm getting over it now, one day at a time.

Bugger! I wont be trying them then Michaela, I'll have to stick to Cleveland .

If you dont mind a drive Trev, try the one at Waterford that Dagboy mentioned earlier, Curry Bandit, thats about half an hours drive, you would have to be keen though to drive that far for a curry .

There is an excellent Indian restaurant in Northbridge they also have a branch in Freo called "Maya Masala". The place is jam packed from Monday to Sunday and their curries are reasonably priced. The most popular dish seems to be the (either) vegetarian or non-vegetarian Thali which is a tray with a selection of around 4 curries (including the special of the day), raita, a desert, rice and a roti all for around AUD13.00. Throw in a couple of beers and "bobs your uncle".

PS. all the chefs I saw in the kitchen were of Indian origin!

That's the place where H had to fight the cockroaches off :scared: I told her not to bother, they don't eat much

Personally I thought the food was pretty good but that may have been the
