Camping in Australia
We are going camping in October and have brought our tent from Uk - big dome affair with hanging up sleeping comaprtments. my question is - Will we be under attack from beasties n things in the main living area as it does not have an all in one ground sheet which is attached to the tent, you just peg the tent down and anything can creep in underneath basically. Sleeping compartments should be okay as they are fully enclosed (I hope).
Has anyone been camping yet?

There could only be a very few reasons to resort to camping in Australia, but I can't think of any.

Di, think I'd get one with the ground sheet attached. I'd be paranoid of snakes crawling into me tent. Our tent sleeps 4 and it only cost $99 in k mart. Aussie tents have fly screens everywhere too, vital here.
Still it could be fun waking up with a python in your sleeping bag

The poms are always saying their lives at home are two tents - at least this way they would get to use them?

Never forget that the present UK government is aiding and abetting the offloading of useless poms onto Oz - providing false work references for skills points, secretly arranging for their houses to be bought by government agents posing as "Mr and Mrs Jones", never allowing negative stories about Oz to be broadcast on British telly, etc. It goes to the very top.

You should give up waiting, Florida. That is it - they are fully grown.

Anyway we'll get in trouble for thread deviation...a transportable offence...
Now, camping is awful, and you are better to stay in a motel. No motel stay in the hotel. No hotel stay in a B&B. No B&B stay in a caravan park cabin. No cabin stay in a caravan park caravan. No caravan stay at home and watch it on TV.

I've been camping out here a few times and never had problems with spiders, snakes, etc. The biggest problem is Mossies but not bad enough to put me off camping and only occasionally is mossies a real problem.

Yeah I had thought of getting a cheapo one. Just that I forked out 300 quid in Uk whithout thinking about how it would hold up in Oz. Doh! I'll let you know how it goes.

The local pubs in regional Australia can represent very good value. In my travels I have stayed in many pubs and enjoyed the lockins after hours.

Diane,
Did you have any problems bringing the tent through customs? We have a 3 man kids tent that we have only used twice. I want to bring it , but I thought there might be a risk with fumigation etc because it has been outside. Do you think it is worth risking it?
Good luck with your trip, thousands of Aussies go camping so it can't be that much of a problem.

You would be hard pressed to find safe free camping areas anywhere on the Eastern Seaboard.
Western Australia, I know nothing about, and the bush there is a perfectly safe area.
