If its really a camper you want (rather then a bigger style with toilet/shower etc) Only one rule: BUY A TOYOTA ...Run forever, and if you do have problems, spares are easy and cheap to get and mechanics know how to work on them.
I have to laugh at the caravan shows where a lot of the super expensive Winnebaggo's are built on Fiat bodies. You beak down in the outback, where you going to get Fiat parts from?
As may be you can tell, I am a very happy Toyota campervan owner. 1992 with 340,000kms - just done 2,900 kms over Christmas, with no day less than 38C - Used no oil and about and egg cup of water.
But don't take my word, go to the markets where the backpackers sell theirs and let them tell you.

Hi,don't know what price range you are looking at, but Kea campers sell ex rental campers that are about 3 years old, They are VW 2.5l diesel, which go forever, and have a bed in the pop top roof which folds down and made for small children. I had a look at a couple in their Hendra depot, and quite liked their layout. Have tv/dvd , fridge gas stove etc
