Calling all Nurses

Just out of interest. How many of you are nursing in Australia or intend to work as a nurse out there and which speciality are you working in?

Which city are you heading to?

Cheers,

Nosey Siobhan!

Hi there,

Both my hubby and I are nurses. He's in Renal and I'm in Neonates. We're heading out in a couple of weeks to validate and are looking to check out Brisbane as a hopeful contender for future living.

What about yourself?

Ginny

Nurse type person heading for Perth. Hoping to get back into renal medicine or stick with general surgery. Don't mind really.

Hiya,

I'm hoping to go out on a Working Holiday Visa in November.

Currently working full time in SCBU and doing my degree part-time - must be mad!

Heading to Sydney first then Melbourne. Eventually hope to end up in Perth - fingers crossed.

Good for you , my wife was talking to girl whos just started at her place the job is same as she was doing in the UK where its called NHS Direct , the new girl is wondering why she was taking home after tax not far off in Dollars what she did take home in Pounds for the same job , the rate in dollars is $23 per hour here more than the pay on the wards .
Rate for the job in the UK is top Grade G.

1 GBP= 1 ASD so a $260,000 home is a 260,000 GBP house?

:D

claireg3 May 19th 2003 7:17 pm

Pay for NHS direct depends on which part of the country you live. If you are lucky its G grade pay but it is generally F grade.

Thats a step up from Health Direct in Perth , plus 6 months sick pay (2 weeks here) , more holiday and a better pension .

District nurse heading for Sydney beginning of September. Hope to have a month off to settle kids into school and look for job doing same or in practice nursing. Have already been offered jobs by agencies but would still like to settle first then look around for what I want to do.

Sorry PB that is where you are wrong, if you are in Perth you cannot possibly know what is going on in Sydney at the moment. The recruiters are desperately looking for nurses in the community as well as the hospitals and interviewing in the UK.

I know I've already been for interviews!

To true but if its a system like sliver chain I would give it a miss.
Ask yourself why they require staff from abroad , when so many here who have nursing skills are giving it up.
PS my wife was a District nurse in the UK and was offered a sliver chain job here , no way would she take it after been given the details of employment.

Not a silver chain involved, but if I do find a job there it can only make the organisation that much better by employing somebody like me.

Now had I been going to Melbourne I could have joined the Royal District nurses which are very good and well organised.

Hi, We're off south of Brisbane area, the wife is a theatre nurse, we do not have any jobs lined up, hope to settle first.
Hoping to go out in October to ease into summer, give the kids time to chill and adjust before the new school year starts late January 2004.

:D :)

SuzeM May 29th 2003 4:19 pm

Been in Sydney since November 2002, was offered a job following a telephone interview before we came out, so packed the kids off to school and started work in A&E two weeks after arriving. Same patients but different roles, not a progressive as UK but they are working on it.

Mums been working here as a Community Nurse for 20 years, its a cross between the UK District Nursing and Health Visitor Role, but future proposals are separation of roles between specialities, such as child health/ aged care etc.

Thanks Sue and Ian,

This info is great to know about Community nursing in Australia as I did not think it was anywhere near the UK standard, how can it be it is still developing in Australia, with different people organising the service (area health and charitable organisations) I wonder if the nurses still require degrees to be nurse unit manager on the community as they do to be Sister in the UK if your mam knows about this could you ask her how the nurses progress up the career ladder on the community, I would be grateful .

Hi Sue,

Very interested in this as well - I'd like to see your info as well if possible. Are you able to either forward the pm or add it to this thread?

Thanks

Nurse in NSW

Helloooo.
My husband is a community psychiatric nurse, and was originally told by all the agencies and some of the health managers that he would not get a community job straight away as he doesn't know the area!!!

In short what a load of rubbish.

He has just sucessfully interviewed for an assertive outreach post North of Sydney for exactly the same job he was doing in the uk!

We did all this once in the country. My advice, if you want and are experienced to get more than a standard RN job apply directly to the health provider, do not go through the agencies.

As for asking why Aussie nurses are leaving, my experience in the UK was that young aus and nz nurses were using their qualification to travel and see the world but fully intended to return to their home country. Just my experience :-)

Hope that helps. Feel free to PM if I can help at all. I am here in NSW so may find info easier to get hold of if I can help anyone else.

Cheers
Esther

By the way I am also an RN mental Health and will be working at Macquarie hospital in Ryde. I found this job within a week of looking!
