Calling all Chefs

Hi Guys and Galls any of you Chefs?

I haven't come across many whilst emigrating so I'm putting out an all points call to find some !

Where are you heading too?

Do you have any good contacts in Australia, i.e. agents, other helpful chefs of HR people you have come across during your surfing?

Any Chefs presently working in Australia which could give us an insite into working conditions and pay rates would be very helpful.

Nick

im looking to head to canberra ACT when we eventually get that far!
i have familt in perth and canberra but prefer the ACT to perth as its apparently RED HOT, im hoping to go into teaching as a friend advised me there's more money and the conditions are better (im currently lecturing in higher education catering) so thats the road im gonna take i hope!

Hi Nick,

Cheffy wife here (Chef at work). We have just submitted our TRA but are hoping to settle south of Perth. We haven't started looking for work yet but will definitely make contact with some agencies before we leave home. We are planning to some travelling on the way so don't know whether anyone would be interestested in employing someone who wouldn't be arriving for a while - we'll see! Best wishes, Katy

My friends son has moved from the Gold coast to Melbourne as he says that it is a better place for him to learn the trade and the fact that there are so many good restaurants there it will only be of a benefit for later on in his carer.Darren

Does anyone have a rough idea of what a chef manager could earn in Brisbane?

Seen lots of jobs for chef managers, but they dont mention salary which i am assuming is negotiable.

But if anyone has an idea, that would be nice.

Cheers

We are living in WA and have a restaurant in Rockingham. The going rate is approx as Shade8 has in her reply.

Good hard working chefs are very hard to get hold of here.

Hiya Jane, can you help me? i see from your last post that you passed your tra all by yourselves! Im in the process of compiling mine at the moment and am not using an agent, can you give me any tips as to how you filled in your TRA?
All i have done so far is try to contact ex employers which has been a tad fruitless.
look forward to hearing from you

Peace 'n' that

Hi Dave

What I would do to trace employers if you can, go there in person armed with your disk with employer statements on it.

Tell them it just needs checking, printing out and signing,

I realise seeing employers in person is damn hard work, depending on their geographical location, but its harder to fob someone in person than via a letter.

Keep a record of ALL efforts used to trace employers, send letters with an SAE to reply and send them recorded delivery and keep receipts. Keep everything you have done/used to trace them.

But if you can travel to see the employer to at least try, all the better.

Good luck

Sam

Hello all

Arrived in sunny sunshine coast 6 weeks ago, hubby an executive chef but trying to stay out of the kitchen. Jobs are plentiful this area earnings about $21 per hour, so not really that good, watch out for agenices they try to get you to sign away weekend / evenings increases. If you go to Brisbane its almost half again more.

Seek.com is a good website.

I've heard that once you have lodged your TRA its undo-able so if it fails you won't be able to have another go so beware please. :scared:

Hi Dave,
All we did was go through cv and contacted people by phone or e-mail, we kept records of each contact name etc.... and then did a stat dec for the ones that were not helpful(to say the least) we had to do it that way as we live too far away to do it in person.
We put it all in correct order with the refs that we did get.
we included menus and pictures too which hubby got his boss at work to sign to say they were his ..... We were lucky in the fact that we could approach his boss who so far has kept it quiet
It was like being a private investigator but it took us about 2 months to get the papers etc in order.
We read through the TRA application and just made sure we covered everything. we also did written statements of his work experience in a general way and did a stat dec for that too. The best advice I can say is just do it all in order and send it in order and as much detail as you can muster.
