The papers are full of jobs for carpenters all offering price work or $40 per hour.
What people have got to understand is that its a different country and rates of pay will not be exactly the same. House prices have gone up but its still way cheaper than the UK, fill your car up and its half price, want some fun at the weekend and its free on the beach.
Subbies here are the same as in the UK, if you work hard on price and put the hours in you can earn $2000 plus, if you want an easy life and short hours earn less.
This is not the UK and it is different, you have to get stuck into the licenses straight away, blue card, business 2 day course, get your carpenter skills recognised and a license and away you go.

Hi
Could someone please tell how you get your carpentry skills assessed in order to get a licence to become self employed? Hubby had his own business in UK and gained City and Guilds Advanced Joinery Skills. He is working for a large company on a casual basis and also has a ABN number and a Blue Card but wants to know how he can get his skills recognised so he can do price work? If any one knows the answers please let us know. Also if there is anyone who has a company in Brisbane who requires an experienced joiner wo also has multi skills please let us know???
Thanks

Hubby started off on $30 an hour tiling until he got established and sorted out his licence etc. That was a real struggle. He is now self employed and averages $2000-$2500 a week and works purely on recommendation. If you are prepared to work hard and are reliable (very important here on the coast as good, reliable tradies are hard to come by) you will get the work and the rewards.

When you get to Oz where ever you are there will be somewhere close by that does the blue card training course. The blue card is a standard health and safety course that everyone has to do to work on sites in oz. Its a 4 hour course and you can not fail it, they talk through every question and give you the answers, cost $77.00.
The business course is if you want to be self-employed or run a business, its $350 and takes 2 days, first day covers health and safety and how to run and maintain sites. Second day is more of the paperwork side of things you will need to know. In the grand scheme of things in coming over here and getting started its not much really. You will also have to have your trade recognised and get a license, same again everyone has to do it and its not hard, fill in a couple of forms, show your experience, either references or certificates and away you go.
Money earnt and what hours depends on how hard you work, where you are working etc, its like working in London the rates are higher, out of the cities the rates will be a little bit lower.
Search Master Builders in Australia and there will be links to the different states then the different locations within the states. Loads of them.
Good luck, Mick

Hi guys,
I'm going over to Brisbane on January 29th on a tourist visa. I've been a self-employed carpenter for just over 4 years now and am just wondering how hard is it to find carpentry company's that are willing to sponsor brit chippies?
All the best
Duncan and Lubica

My hubby also a carpet fitter. He puts in the hours and earns well from it. Approx $2000 - $3000 per week.
