AUSTRALIA today urged Indonesia not to use excessive force to quell separatist rebels in Aceh.

Indonesia's military yesterday launched rocket attacks on Free Aceh Movement rebels around Banda Aceh, while troops began parachuting in as President Megawati Sukarnoputri put the province under martial law.

Defence Minister Robert Hill said Australia wished the issue could be resolved peacefully, but supported Indonesia's territorial integrity
