Default Cairns/Reef trip... advice?

We had originally planned to do our weekend trip in the Whitsundays area. But we've now switched to Cairns for flight reasons.

I'm hoping for some input on the following:
-hotels
-day trips (reef, helicopters, rainforest, etc)
-getting around

We are hoping to go up on a Thursday evening, so we'll be staying 3 nights (Thurs, Fri, Sat). We'd like to check out the reef and do a helicopter tour of it as well. Right now I'm thinking of spending Friday checking out the Reef and part of Cairns if time allows. And then if possible maybe doing a day trip somewhere on the mainland like Daintree forest if it's not too far.

Any advice on where to stay and which tours to take? We're hoping not to need a rental vehicle, so we're trying to rely on airport shuttle and walk/cab to tour departure points.

hi comet 555 , just come back from a week in port douglas at the mandalay apartments 45 mins north of cairns fantastic part of the world ,while we were there we took a trip to the reef to go swimming with the fishies .we went with quicksilver and cannot fault a single part of the day it cost roughly $450 for a family of four inc all equipment and a buffet lunch as many prawns as you can handle. once your out there you can take your helicopter flight there is a landing pad right beside the pontoon where the ship moors up not sure of prices for this but im sure its on there website.also from port douglas we took a drive through the rainforest up to cape tribulation great day out just watch for the crocs and as good as the creeks look keep your toes out. i found that once you pay for return shuttle and then tours to rainforest etc it worked out better for us to get a hire car $350 for the week all in.hope this helps and have a great holiday

out of cairns try passions for your day trip to the reef. it has one of the best reputations. the daintree is a bit of a hike for a day trip.

Perfect, thanks guys.

I'm thinking of doing this one:
http://www.cairnsinfo.com/tourRates/2%20Day/1044/

It's got a full reef trip and the next day is Kuranda by rail/skyrail.
