Hi Kala - Gill here!

The taxi fare should not be more than about $15 from the Airport to the Esplanade.

Have just tried phoning friends who are actually staying at one of the Backpackers places in Sheridan Street which they think is very good, they also work there.
So many to choose from but not sure how good they are. As for things to do, if she stays at a Backpackers place, she will be informed of everything that is going on in the area! Our friends are told all about different deals for trips around the Reef, Cairns, Oceanfree cruises, best places to drink/eat etc!Meeting other people, socialising with them. They've really got it sorted!

Will try to phone them again and ask for the name of the place they are staying. Will get back to you then Kala

Hope she has a good time here! What time is she arriving?

HI again!

They are staying at a backpackers called INN THE TROPICS, at 141 Sherdidan Street phone number 4031 1088. Also, by reputation Gilligans is supposed to be one of the better ones but maybe more expensive?
Their address is 89 Grafton Street tel.4041 6566.

Hope this helps Kala!

Thanks a million, She arrives at 11.40pm, she is in Mel at the mo with my Aunt and tried to book a flight last week and it was $130 but arrived at 9.40pm so she thought she'd wait and try and get one that arrives earlier (not in the dark). She didn't realize that it is he school holidays and the prices have now gone up to $500 so she took the cheapest one she could get $350 and it arrives even later than the original one. ANy way most places don't do late check in ( I tell you I am too good to my customers waiting up till all hours of the night for them ) so she has booked for a couple of nights on the esplanade (I thought it would be a good idea to turn up there as it is still a bit busy at midnight) and will move on from there
so I will recomend the backpackers you have said.

I told her to go up the cable car thing but I cant really remember what else there was to do in Cairns.

Thanks again
Kala

Kala - there is LOADS for her to do! Just costs money! If shes got it - she will be lost for choice! They will give her a few ideas anyway - and good deals for the day trips. Just tell her to go to any 'holiday/day trip brochure place, the staff will help or she could just read all the leaflets available

Sure she will find out soon after arrival

Hi kala,

tell your sis to get herself out to Chillagoe (we went there last long weekend) - great views / caves to explore / swimming holes / only the last 25km is unsealed roads, so quite accessible and well worth the 3hr drive to get there. A bit more rural / semi outback, so worth seeing. You can also get there via the Savannahlander train, from Cairns.

Mission beach is also quite nice, just a couple of hours away south, good for backpackers and the Tam O'Shanter forest there is really good for spotting wild Cassowaries. Jump the beach (for parachuting ) is good down there and the Tully river isn't far and excellent for white water rafting.

The Tablelands are really pretty and the "Waterfall circuit" is good for a day out and a swim, Millaa Millaa fallls are particulalrly nice. Also some nice wineries to take in and sample etc on the way....Lake Tinaroo is good and if she can do a bit of waterskiing she'll have a blast.

Further up north is Wonga Beach (2hr drive) and is very secluded and unspoilt, good fishing / camping there, miles of empty beach.

The Daintree is beautiful - she should try PK's Jungle Village - suits backpackers down to the ground.

Apart from that, there is the obvious reef / snorkelling / diving etc.

Tell your sis to have a go at AJ Hacketts ( Bungy jumping ) - bit of a hairraiser!!!

The skyrail is very scenic - good views out to the ocean, the Kuranda railway isn't too bad, if the weather is good. Kuranda itself is ok but packed out with tourists and tourist tat shops - probably one to avoid.

The best way to see Cairns is to have a couple of boozy nights out in the city and then spend the rest of the time exploring outside of the city. Cairns city doesn't really hold that much excitment for me, IMO. It's the stuff around it that make the area great.

Hope she has a great time.

She is heading south from Cairns and I have told her she has to go to mission beach, I went there a couple of years ago because I wsaw a programme on tele about the cassawary that NAtalie outta eastenders had done, I still to this day think it is the nicest beach I have ever seen, loads of follage goin right up to the white sand.

I didn;t do the train but did the skyrail both ways which I am happy about as most people have said the train isn't as good.

Thanks for all the tips, I will pop them all to her in an mail

Cheers
Kala

Hi Kala

We only had about 3 days in Cairns in 2000, and did a 'rainforests and waterfalls' day trip (up around the table lands (babinda boulders, Josephine falls, Millaa Millaa falls, Lake eacham etc), which was great.
And we took a day trip to Fitzroy Island (better than Green Island imo), where we walked to the other side of the island and went snorkeling(accumponied sp?!, our first time) near "little fitzroy", and saw the fish feeding.
Later we went snorkelling by ourselves at "Nudey beach" ( ), which went fine, untill I saw a freaky looking fish(I would prefer to see a spider to a scary looking fish!!)

Hey, btw, I guess your sister hasn't found love in Geraldton then?
