Re: Cairns
Cairns is a great place to live if you are after somewhere that is quite laidback, not too big, don't mind living in shorts 365 days a year & are not looking for sophistication, designer labels & culture.
The weather in winter is fabulous, wet season can be hard work, the humidity draining, make sure you have aircon & work indoors.
There are some suburbs to be avoided but generally it is a good place to live with good schools etc.
The CBD at night can get a little tricky but generally a little bit of commonsense will keep you safe. It is not like the big cities at all. There are issues with drunken locals who can be racially abusive but personally I have never felt unsafe there but neither would I walk around late at night on my own.
If you are into water sports, fishing, rainforest, this is your place.
Driving around Cairns is very easy, no real traffic issues but public transport is pretty poor. Car parking is getting more difficult too but still not the issues of the larger cities.
Unemployment is a big issue here for now & should be a big consideration if you are thinking of moving here.
If there is anything else, just ask. Quite a few Cairns people on here at the moment & I am sure you will get some varied responses!
