We are getting high volumes of Amazon now. If anyone fancies a job as a postie I'd be applying now. Aus Post has to be taking people on permanently soon. Im anticipating Saturday deliveries by staff posties next year.... After July 2019 i reckon... Could be even sooner. Totally swamped with parcels. When Amazon advertises it must be triggering people for all kinds of online shopping elsewhere also.

Big Big changes at post now because of Amazon and it's massive increase in parcels. Last week they announced that there will be a trial of our 6.30AM starters being paid the 15pct shift allowance that the full-timers get. Even if they maintain on part time hours it means a 170 dollar a week payrise for them....This will be rolled out around the country. Basically, they are about to offer every part-timer full time. It also means the end of shift allowance attacks that we endured under Ahmed.

Amazon is really flying now.

They will have to take on heaps of staff next year for absolute certainty. I'd say we may get an out of EBA payrise to try and stop further attrition.

You need to look a little deeper into where Oz post were and what they are becoming. No doubt Amazon has played a part here, however Ahmed has set Oz Post up nicely for this by seeing the growth that will come from parcels and re-structuring the business to suit.

No business ever begrudges paying workers more when those workers are helping to increase profits. On the other hand business do begrudge paying workers more when the hand is forced by unions and left wing governments. This is why unions need to re-invent themselves. Gone are the days of pickets, strikes, threats, aggression. Today is all about saying hello to making profit, and if that means incentivising workers to achieve that, happy days.

You are seeing this first hand at Oz Post - its such a shame the unions had no involvement in this process. Had they of done so they could be shouting their worth from the roof tops.

You were saying ?

No more attacks on Penalty rates at Aus Post. A hard fought battle well won. Plus like I said we are getting a mid term EBA rise.... Certainly bonuses as well.

“One Network Structure” PDO retention trial extends 15% penalty rates to all posties | CEPU - The Communications Union

The site says it can't be reached.

But let me guess. A union claiming it was all their work. Yeah right. Ha ha ho ho.

It's pretty simple. Supply and demand. Supply of parcels there. Oz Post was re-structed to suit. Now the demand for people.

Here you go

“One Network Structure” PDO retention trial extends 15% penalty rates to all posties

July 29, 2018 A culmination of many months of discussion and planning between your Union and Australia Post will see the introduction of a trial of the One Network Structure across segments of the delivery network shortly. For far too long, posties at many workplaces across the country have been required to work side by side each other, performing the same duties to the same expected standards, while one takes home 15% less in wages than the other due to a half-hour variation in shift commencement times. For many years pay disparity has resulted in a demonstrated exceedingly low morale amongst posties, along with poor retention rates – leading to higher overall labour costs. The One Network Structure aims to change this.National Secretary Greg Rayner, National President and NSW/ACT Branch Secretary Shane Murphy along with NSW/ACT Assistant Secretary Peter Chaloner, have spearheaded the discussions, planning and assessment process on behalf of the Union with senior management over many months to develop the blue-print for a trial which aims to deliver equally beneficial outcomes for both Australia Post and CEPU members. The most recent of these talks, held earlier this month, has resulted in a comprehensive plan that will reorganise work functions and scheduling to maximise Australia Post’s product movement efficiencies.Importantly for CEPU members, the trial structure is organised around local rostering arrangements which extend minimum 15% shift penalty rate to all PDO posties. At this stage, Australia Post have agreed to implement the trial structure across a number of workplaces located in New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia. At a summit taking place between management and your CEPU National Officials along with every State Branch Secretary, your Union intends to seek, and is confident of obtaining, an extension of the trial to include sites across other states and territories. This summit, being held over Tuesday and Wednesday this week, will aim to finalise trial site locations and the trial’s duration. At the trial’s conclusion, a thorough assessment process to measure impacts and outcomes against key indicators will occur with a view to rolling out a successful final structure across the entire national delivery network.

mate - I can never keep up with all the rates and overtimes ...and EBAs and what have-yous...
oh it's so much easier just getting a salary!!

To be honest, I can get why people get annoyed with Unionism - it's hard keeping up with the endless legislation and awards!!

Why trial it? You can ether cost and budget it or you don't...I don't get it...

The thing was Badge, that the 15pcters were a dying breed, it basically only applied to full-timers that were employed until say 2005.... very very few after that time. So the vast majority of them are 45 years old and above. Ahmed was trying to get rid of all penalty rates at Post and this caused massive attrition within the non-15pcters who were starting just 30 mins later. Now that Amazon has come along and looks like exploding to me from what I'm seeing at our place, Amazon needs a steady reliable workforce, and I've said this all along, even way back 5 years ago when these penalty cuts were really taking effect. If you pay peanuts you'll get monkeys. That's when all the chucking of parcels and non-door knocking really started to happen and gain newsworthy attention. Hence the attrition.

The crux of this is, if Amazon and other online retailers want decent delivery, they have to pay for it via salaried staff on penalty rates, including 30pct on the weekends. That will probably start to happen next year as the volumes go up.

The contract companies have lost the battle and Aus Posts core staff have won through. Their penalty rate staff has proven to be the most reliable in the delivery stakes and now Amazon is going to go with them. Aus Post will be taking on 100's of staff over the next few years.... All with penalty payments.

The 30pct I get for working night shift is worth at least 25 to 30K to me. Then there's Overtime. So in Delivery with it's volume ebbs and flows penalty rates are a vital component.

They are using electric walking trolleys on trial around Southport in Queensland at present. I'd say most rounds because of the high volumes of parcels will eventually start to be delivered by foot in the next few years. Where it's applicable, in most inner urban areas, or where the majority of the population is.

As I said, they have jumped on the bandwagon. What a surprise.

The bottom line is, Ahmed set the business up to move forward. Letters are dead, parcels are in. He tried to clear out the dead wood by killing off cushy pay structures and making those redundant who were not in the vision.

Now that all that is done, and Ahmed did the deal with Amazon, Oz Post can move forward, and that means people, retaining and hiring. You've got to dangle a carrot to maintain that. That's why you have what you have.

This is nothing to do with the union. Oz Post management had a couple of meetings with them, "you OK with this?" Yep ....... everyone is a winner lets move forward. Simple as that.

If the business wasn't there you would have nothing.

Meanwhile Amazon Aus, is being unionized Welcome to Dandenong Victoria.

Probably the only place in the world where the union has managed to get in at their start.
