Default Buying an unregistered vehicle in Vic

Hi all,
we would love some advice from people who have bought an unregistered vehicle in Victoria before! We are buying an exrental campervan and the company selling it to us will be removing the Qld plates before the sale. We now have to reregister it in Melbourne and get Vic plates. Does anyone know what we have to do to reregister the campervan? And do we have to pay stamp duty? And when we decide to later move to another state, do we have to pay that stamp duty again? Pretty expensive business it seems.. Thanks for any help!

You'll need a roadworthy certificate or whatever the Vic equivalent is called (like an MOT). I'd strongly recommend putting the onus on the seller to provide one. Then all you need is the relevant registration of a vehicle form and the fee.

Have a look at the Victorian Government's VicRoads Vehicle Information Package for more information.

In general terms, stamp duty is payable on all transactions where money is exchanged between two parties, eg a contract. In your case, you'll pay stamp duty on the purchase contract of the vehicle. When you pay registration fees in any state, the stamp duty component (if any) will be included.
