OK.

Update:
Oven set for collection next Tuesday.

Encountered first significant problem in that the packaging was substantially larger than the oven which added to the transport costs.
UPS now wanted 650 GBP - still 'save' money compared to Australia but not as much.
So, gone for Allied Pickfords - 400 GBP including insurance door to door but sea freight.

So, current total costs are: 940 for the oven and 664 for the transport = $1600 compared with $3500 here.

A few forms to fill in but nothing too onerous.

I'll update you once it arrives (in 2015)

And did you have to run it upside down for it to work?

Yeah trendy lightshades and wallpaper are mega $$$$ here. You might not like wallpaper (I do since being in the UK for a year) but you do need lightshades!! Of course it's a bit difficult if you don't know where you are going to live and what light fittings will be needed but I bought 2 of those chandelier type light fittings from Argos, I have seen similar here at 4 times the price I paid!!!

Well you have the container you may as well fill it up, no discount for empty spaces.

Has it actually left yet? I was quoted approximately 12 weeks for my 100 cubic feet shipment to arrive here. It was picked up on March 22nd so that was 8 weeks ago.

The freight is still in the UK as they don't have enough cu ft to fill their container yet.................maybe Allied Pickfords will have a bigger custom base so yours will depart soon as. Fingers crossed.

That one at Argos: 40m 4 Arm Multi Height Lightweight Rotary Airer. 850/1374
£34.99 GBP
Size when open (H)185, (W)168, (D)168cm.

or this one:
Portable Clothing Line / Hoist - 50m
$44.95 AUD or $56.60 delivered
Setup dimensions of 180 x 180 x 186 cm

The seem similar in size, and not that big a difference in price, the UK one only 2% more expensive, as long as you don't have to pay delivery on the UK one.

No, they're different products. The one you show as being available here is based on a tripod frame thing, which will blow over in a light breeze - it's not secure. The Argos one has a ground spike so that you can stand it up in the garden without fear of it blowing over.

I eventually found one in Aldi - they were on special at $35 a go, however I have never seen them there since.

I doubt it, it won't leave until a container is full. They said up to 13 weeks.
To be honest the length of time is less important to me. We'll continue to cook on the camp fire.

I recently purchased a guitar from the US and had it sent to Aus. Cost in US was AUD$1350. Locally this guitar costs AUD$2590 (for the musos it's a fender stratocaster US deluxe).

The US retailer wouldn't ship outside US so I used this company www.priceusa.com.au to ship it to aus (I've no connection to the company whatsoever except as a customer). They charge an extra 5% or more. Shipping via Fedex turned out to be about AUD$240.00.

The most annoying aspect was customs in Aus. I knew that the guitar was going to be hit for GST of 10% as it was over AUD$1000 but I also got hit for other charges which I didn't think were necessary. (incidentally, although fedex stated on its tracking page the package was "in customs" in fact it doesn't leave fedex but rather sits in a fedex warehouse and is processed by fedex employees who are licensed by customs. Aussie customs themselves were extremely helpful in subsequent enquirys). I got hit for an extra 5% duty even though it is made in the USA and so should not have attracted duty due to a free trade agreement. On enquiry I was told that they hit you anyway unless there is very specific paperwork that the item is made and was shipped from the US. To get a refund I would have had to pay a $120 processing fee.

I also got hit for a quarantine charge because it's made out of wood (AQIS charges $15 but fedex about $80 processing fee - info I got from aussie customs, not fedex who insisted on quarantine to earn the processing fee IMO). There was also processing charge of around $40 which I was unaware of but can't complain about.

Anyway, I managed to make a little saving but not as much as I expected. I think got unlucky re all the charges. In the future I'll stick to importing items below AUD$1000 (note that customs has their own exchange rate so you need to leave a little room when making the conversion).

out of interest did you reclaim your VAT ? our shipper informs us that if its sold to you for export you can reclaim it, or in some circumstances the shipper can do that for you, so another 15% ish off, which make sup if yu do get hit for duty/cutoms in oz... we are just doing a renovation and planning a new kitchen.. planning on bringing all appliances over.. e=current excahnge rates just kill it right now.

as crazy as it sounds we are actually seriously considering having whole kitchen made in UK and sent over...in a single container.. from what we've seen so far things in oz are a bit dearer anyway but add in the ex rate and you can be a long way out, its funny virtually all ther aussies we know are buying nearly all their discretionary spending overseas..

Mine left last week, due to arrive into Sydney on July 4th, I've had a letter from the removals over here and they said it would be 14-21 days after the ship has docked before delivery.

I hope it arrives on time as all my winter clothes are in it.

Interesting thread, kitchens did seem a bit dated when we visited Oz last year, some $800,000 show homes had kitchens that could of come from MFI 15 years ago (apart from the big fridge).

Not every ones cup of tea but what are Ikea like out in Oz, are they european style or sourced locally?

ikea is pretty much the same as UK, nearly all the kitchens are bespoke made to measure totally in smallish workshops, so i guess quality does tend to be what you pay for, though i know what you mean, there is a lot of thinish straight bog standard mdf type carcasses even in high end houses.. usually set off by nice stone and applicances though.
