Question Buying a house on a 495 visa???!

We are currently in Perth and have been looking into buying a house. We were shown round one at the weekend and the real estate guy said as we are on a 495 visa we can only buy a brand new house that hasnt been lived in?!

Is this right? How on earth do I afford one of them?!!!!

Any advice would be good!

Hi
We have just bought a house that is 1 yr old. We were told same. You apply to FIRB and so long as you are going to live in it its OK. It took about 2 weeks to get approval so in your contract make sure FIRB approval is a condition.

We're coming over on 23 September 2007 on a 495, and after being a bit concerned about this ourselves, asked for confirmation from FIRB. They e-mailed back to say that you could buy a 'second hand' (defined as previously lived in) property as long as there was at least 12 months left on a temporary visa. Send them an e-mail to confirm for yourselves, they were very helpful and prompt

Hi UK2Perth

We are in Mandurah on a 495 visa - did you get any joy with the FIRB with regards to what house you can buy??

We are at that stage now and are not 100% sure

Appreciate any info thanks.

Hi there,

We eventually bought in Lakelands, just up the road from you!

Everything was fine, because of the temp visa you send off for FIRB approval and they never really get declined. Apparantly they dont allow you to buy property to rent out on a temp visa but if you going to live in it you will be fine. It only took 1 week for the approval to come through as well!

Also the house we bought had been previously owned so the "buying a new house only" was a load of cr*p! ha ha ha.

Good luck.

How you liking Meadow Springs? You been here long?

Thanks Hayley thats great, yep your only minutes away!!!

How do you actually send for FIRB approval, through the real estate agent?

We've been here 2 months now and was torn between Lakelands & Meadow Springs (renting) but fate took us to Meadow Springs. I really like it here - handy to our little shopping centre, and local for the train, beach etc etc.

So it sounds like we can pretty much buy any type of house?

Yeh you should be ok to buy any house.

The real estate will apply to FIRB for you as the house purchase goes through.

Good luck with where ever you decide to buy!!!
