Bear in mind that if you are receiving Living Away from Home Allowance then you may lose this if you purchase a home (get some professional assistance on this if important).
Also you should be aware that if you don't get permanent residence and have to leave Australia, you may need to sell at an awkward time.

Re: Buying a house on a 457 Temp Visa
Hi
We live south of Brisbane and have came to Oz on a 457 visa. We purchased our house and no it was not brand new. You do have to go through the Foreign Investment Approval Board and to fill in the forms which you can down load from the web site. This will give you the information you need.
Also this only can be filled in against the address that you want to buy.
Like some one stated if you get LAFA this will stop and you will not be entitled to the first time buyers allowance.
Also you must state this as one of your clauses " subject to FIRB approval " when signing a contract for any house you put a offer in as this can take up to 30 days and more to be approved and to allow enough time for this approval to be accepted. Remember if one house falls through you have to re apply on the new address you may put a offer in.
If you want any help PM me and will give you more details

We purchased our house on a 457 visa, we had to get FIRB approval, it took about 2 weeks to come through.

That's pretty quick.
Aren't there also some restrictions on how many times you can sell-up and buy another house if you're not a permanent resident?
As JAJ says if you have to leave Australia you've got to sell up, it may not be the easiest thing to do in the current market.
