www.carsales.com.au

If you look on the RACV website you can see used cars that have had a RACV inspection and will also tell you what (if anything) is wrong with them.

Nah I hate car dealers, the guy my boyfriend bought a car from recently was a real slime ball and they managed to screw up the suspension so it had to be replaced.

I think the RACV has a guide to buying a used car from dealers though, otherwise just google for it. I remember when buying my car I found alot of info on the net.

Hehe I think it is pretty similar to buying from a dealer. There are a few differences but as we have found you are just as likely to get screwed over by a dealer as a private seller so one more reason not to bother with them for me

my grandpa always told me to follow the RAC advice...you can have it inspected by an RAC mechanic for a fee... sometimes it can take a while tho.

Do a revs check to make sure it's not stolen. i think you have to pay extra to check interstate...which sucks. can't give you any more advice on that cos my mum did it for me last time i bought a car!

depends how much you're looking to spend. my cars have all been heaps as I'm skint so I've always bought privately. My brother often buys his privately cos he's mechanical and knows the right stuff to ask. My mum and sister both got their cars through dealers (still used cars tho) and they've all had less probs than me...cos they spend more money!

it sounds lame, but i'd consider going into an RACV office (or even just on their website) and asking their advice (esp if it's your first car in Oz). I know when I was buying a car in the UK (I'm Australian) I would've been completely ripped off without local advice! Good luck!

Try the government auctions, someone I know in Sydney went to the one up there and bought a great car, used it for two years then sold it for $6,000.00 more than he paid for it.

We bought a great book in the local post office called, 'Buying and Selling New and Used Cars'. It cost $9.95 and covered buying privately as well as from a dealer. It explains the buying process and reveals some tricks of the trade. We found it gave us much more confidence when buying.

I found a link to the publishers site which may help
http://www.pascalpress.com.au/Search...x=0&Search.y=0

It was definately worth it's weight in gold.

It weighs 130grams if you are interested in ordering one as this may help with calculating postage costs.

We bought privately and found the car through an ad in www.tradingpost.com.au
