Buying a computer in uk or oz
 

Was wondering if anyone has purchased a new computer before heading to oz or just got one there instead,if they did get one in the uk which maker covered you while in oz with its warranty,Did i not here dell covers you.
Its just mine is getting old these days and would not mind an upgrade,i suppose i can wait till i am over there and get one.
As there is probably plenty life in this one yet,but wondered how prices was over there and if best get in uk and ship over with rest of stuff or just hang on.
I do have a laptop but i like the use of both laptop and desktop.

Hi Brian,

We brought 4 pc's over that we had in uk.

Also have re purchased a few more since being here, price wise they are pretty good in oz, but I would guestimate that UK p.c's may be better specced.
I say that cos, the one I have is a 3.4 ghz and ive had it now for 4 years buying it from pc world in uk, and oz pc's dont seem to really have moved on that much ( but then i dont know if uk pc's have either )

We have HP and DELL and IBM

Never had a warranty issue, as most pc's these days very rarely need anything doin under warranty that you couldnt do yourself, or with the aid of a pc doctor for very little money

Im not sure on international warranty cover, perhaps email dell both in UK and austrtalia and ask the same question

I would agree with timber floor's comment about being able to replace most parts by yourself. I am considering purchasing a new system from Mesh as I have read a few threads confirming that the specs may not be the same in Oz, do becareful about printers though. Again I have read that it is particularly hard to get cartridges for UK printers, although you could probably get them refilled at a local shop in main cities.

Very nearly bought a MESH system a few years back, they used to make some extreme systems !!

We have a Lexmark all in one X3550 we bought in oz for $49 ( after $30 cashback never received from WOE Sight Unseen ) ! scans , copies n prints.. and pretty cool.

Our laser printer we brought over with us from uk, needs looking at, and really cant be arsed lol

Yup, I agree - I brought my pc over from the UK as it was one I'd built myself and if anything went wrong I'd have to fix it anyway. The printer I brought over though was a different matter - it wasn't released over here and hence I couldn't get cartridges for love nor money.....mind you, the printers here are pretty cheap! :)

I ripped the guts out of mine and bought a second-hand case and monitor here (very cheap). I had a fairly expensive soundcard that I didn't want to junk and more stuff on my hard drives than I wanted to back-up.

I'd say that the choice of components here is very limited compared to the UK but that is by a rough look around, nothing extensive.

As long as it surfs the net, serves some tunes and plays Worms World Party and Tiger Woods 2004 I'm happy :D

Go via America and buy a MAC!!! (cheaper than here or there!)

Worldwide service fabulous systems, no crashing of the systems, loads less probs with the internet.
And if you don't know what you're doing you can buy 52 one to one session with a mac expert to show how to get the most out of it... again you can get these sessions in any country at any apple store! £79 here in the UK... possibly cheaper in the USA... doesn't matter where you buy it... You get the same great service all over the world!

Best of all.... it's sooo sexy!!!

If interested meshcomputers.com they still sell some extreme systems at reasonable prices. Dont know if you can purchase it tax free prior to moving to Oz, if so you probably would have to pay import tax?

Actually apple warranties are region specific. If you buy applecare in the UK it WILL NOT cover you in Australia. You instead have to buy an Asia Pacific Applecare agreement.

Just thought I would point that out as its worth knowing if anyone has a mac in the UK and is shipping it here.

I'd buy it Aus. No more expensive. You can get one when you arrive so you don't have to wait for the ship and you don't have any potential hassle with import duty (for being less than 12 months old). You'll also have the right plug.

Bought my mac in USA, bought apple care there, just had it 'seen to' under that in Birmingham. No questions! So perhaps it's changed since you last looked or maybe it's only for the Northern hemisphere...

Is this the same for Laptops?

Good advice about printers though, I had not considered availability of replacement ink.

Am months away yet from having top pack, though am thinking of sending my desktop over and buying a new laptop before we go as our current laptop is has a limited future anyway.

I bought Applecare for our Mac in Singapore last year and have no problems using it in the UK :)
