Buying car when first arrived ...
Is it possible to buy a car (having a small deposit but most on credit) when you first arrive.
ie - you don't have jobs sorted out yet ...
can this be done or is this going to be a problem ?

Re: Buying car when first arrived ...
I posted a question about this about a month ago.. Apparently its easy to get car finance as a newly arrived ex-pat.
Do a search on the forum this will come up - I think dodgypossum posted the reply for me. But its on a thread I started.

Spalen.....you deserve a medal for that one......the ladies name is Podgypossom but I do like your interprtation better
Here is the thread you referred to......

Getting credit seems to have been no problem for PP - probably she charmed them......or frightened them maybe
However she did have a wedge against the price and maybe hubby had a job ?
The impression I have gleaned from this site is that it is not so easy to obtain credit as in general Aus does not recognise any credit rating you may have built up in UK even if you can prove it.
Stephen, I would say you could be on a sticky wicket having no job and no fixed abode (guessing you will be renting ?) but hope I am wrong

Re: Buying car when first arrived ...
We bought a cheapo second hand car the first week we were here by bunging it on our UK credit card. Once things had settled down a bit (permanent address, job, etc) we then went for a bank loan to pay off the card.

Are cars much cheaper in Aus than here?
I've got a Toyota Celica - 3 years old - at present and want to replace it with the same once I get to Aus in January.

Er, no you'll find that cars in aus hold their value better so are a lot more secondhand. Even ten/fifteen year old cars have a high value compared to say a ten year old mondeo here in UK.
Having said all that the older cars are generally in good nick.
