Default Buying a car (or two) in Aus and info request on how to buy a holiday

Been here six months and having bought the second car (mine) I thought I would pass on my musings.

Buying a new car in the UK is a lot easier. I would go here http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/news/index.htm?news_id=2577 and see what the best deals are and ring and deal. Ring a few and see how low they would go and talk to local dealers about matching/beating. Easily do it all over phone.

In Aus the dealers don't want to give a price out over the phone. I found the best way was to go to here http://www.carbroker.com.au/diy_car_shopping.php and pay Chris $35 to get me a quote. I then rang around the dealers to see who wanted to play ball. Very few do but some will. The ones that don't usually go quiet when you tell them Chris's price. Others want you to visit them to get a quote no doubt so that they can offer an amazing offer if you sign there and then. Then you get the guys that want your business, give you a price and let you know they are happy to do anything to win. These are the 2/3 dealers you are interested in.

I have recently bought a Hyundai Getz and Mazda6 from the dealers in Dandenong http://dandenonghyundai.com.au/ http://www.dandenongmazda.com.au/index.html. Can't remember the price for the Getz but they beat Chris's price. The Mazda6 (Classic auto)I am getting over the next few days is $33.1k OTR versus $37.4k OTR. Chris quoted $33.9 and having told the dealer he offered $33.3. I dealt with Kevin at Mazda (over the phone).

Some dealers say they will beat the best price. Nothing to stop you going back to the dealers and Chris and playing them off against each other. Personally, I want them to make a modest profit so I would get the two keenest dealers to put their best offer on the table and take the best. I have a lot more time for the dealers that initially put an offer on the table. Had one dealer who wanted to put an offer on the table but was then stopped by her sales manager. Local dealer just down the road, told them I'm buying over the next 48 hours, said I won't play you off against each other, best price wins. I assume they decided that matching 33.9 was too much for them.

Some sites for info.

Now I used to ring the teletext companies in the UK to get my holiday price cut by 25-30%. Where does one go to buy a cheap holiday? Which companies?

My daughter fancies a holiday in Bali as "they don't have bombs there all the time, dad". Gold Coast looks better to me.

You have gone a long way round, by the sounds of it. We simply went to www.discountnewcars.com.au got their very best price, then went to all the dealers, and said if they could beat it we would buy. Simple, saved us over 4 grand on the list price of the Hyundai we bought.
