Hi All

My wife and I are flying to Sydney in August and then taking a trip up north to Cairns. Our plan would be to buy a car in Cairns and then drive back down over a few months to Sydney to settle down.

In the initial two weeks in Sydney, we will be trying to get our NSW driving license, TFN and Medicare sorted etc… We won’t have our own address, but we have a friend there who said we are more than welcome to use his during our transition.

My question is; what is the procedure in buying a car in QLD and then changing the rego once back in Sydney...

All advice most welcome.

It's not a problem. You just re-register the car in NSW and get new number plates. You have to pay again for a full years registration and then claim back the unused registration from QLD.

Only thing I would say is if you plan on buying a new car you might get a better deal on it in a major city, such as Brisbane or Sydney, rather than Cairns.
