Default Buying a car - private or dealer?

We get to Melbourne on Jan 20th and have a hire car booked for a couple of weeks. Was wondering what people's experiences of buying cars has been? I guess the "car dealer" is an international phenomenon (if you get my drift ) but are there any specific pitfalls that we shoud look for (eg in the UK we're always interested in MOT, service history, mileage etc etc). The last car we bought in Oz was around 10 years ago and was an ancient Mazda 929 from Darwin. Still, it made it the long way round to Cairns!

Or...if anyone knows anyone in the Melbourne area who wants to sell a people carrier...

I have never bought a car in Oz but having looked at carsales.com.au and looking into the consumer law private sales are cheaper but no comeback - dealer sales are more but you have more rights.

Obvious if you think about it.

I bought from adealer, but next time will do it privately and get the state motoring organisation to give i the once over like the AA and RAC do in UK. Dealers are rip off merchants no matter where you are.

It really depends on how much you want to spend and what age/type of car you want. Dont buy new unless you get an amazing discount. Big used cars like holden commodores are a good buy at the moment, they are losing nearly half of their value in about 2 years from new, so if you can buy an ex fleet one thats done hardly any miles and has full service history that would be a good buy.
