Question buying a car once there

Just wondered what would be the best option for buying a second hand car?
Ive got a budget of around $6000 to spend on a car.
Would it be better to purchase privatly from the local paper or to go to a garage where they have to give you warranty as part of the deal by law?
Ive `heard` that they are not as `dodgy` as in the u.k.
Any advice would be great.....

If you buy privately in Qld, you can ask them to get it inspected by RACQ, you tell the seller that you will buy it as long as the inspection is OK.
Buying from a car yard is more protected than in the UK - again you can insist on an RACQ inspection, and they have to give you a warranty for 3 months/specified mileage.
The inspection report goes straight to you, as you pay for it. The seller does not get a chance to see it first. Also a car offered for sale in Qld has to have a Safety Certificate (like an MOT) before it is offered for sale, otherwise it must be sold unregistered. Steer clear of unreg'd cars, they will need work.
If you want to know more details pm me.
