Buying a car in NZ

Buying a car in NZ
I have PR visas for NZ & am going to visit for 4 weeks to have a look around, get a feel for the place and suss out the best places to live.
I was going to hire a car or campervan, but thought, as I have a PR visa & am going back shortly afterwards to settle, it would be more sensible & economical to BUY a reasonably cheap car!
Is this possible without any NZ perminent address, (although maybe a contact in Welly could help me out)
I know you have to have Warranty & Rego (MOT & Tax I think).
But what else.
Can I do this???
It would make things easier & cheaper & a car to use when I go back out!!

Yes it is feasible to buy a car; second hand car prices are very competitive in NZ at
the moment.
You can get cars at the auction for as little as $500 but you need to have the
necessary skill to avoid the pitfalls especially rust, the W.O.F test is very
stringent about this and when cheaper cars are rejected because of rust, they simply
aren't economic to repair.
The main problem I see for you is where are you going to store it when you are out of
the country? if you have a friend that will solve the problem and also provide an
address for service.

Re: Buying a car in NZ - not at all without permanent address
first of all, you need a permanent address to register your car. they send a reigster
label by mail, you can't pick it up in their office.
Maybe there is another way... if you can open a bank account first and put some
address (maybe your friend's) and ask them print your bank statement out. Then you
can use it to prove your address. However, this is not right way.
you better check RTA website what you need to rigister your car..
Another thing is, you should be very careful to choose a secondhand car anyway..
cheers,

Re: Buying a car in NZ
If your talking about Wellington there are load of places to store cars very cheaply.
You do need an address to buy a car but if you buy from a dealer then they will probably let you use their address until you get sorted.

Hi Alan
If you buy a second-hand car, make sure you get an AA vehicle inspection
It doesn't cost much & is worth it's weight in gold if it reveals the car is a lemon!
