Buying a car in Brisbane

Buying a car in Brisbane
Hi... we are at the stage of booking our rental car for when we arrive in Brisbane, but are unsure on how long we will need one for. It is very expensive and would like to just book a week but is it feasible to buy a car in such a short time. If we aren't too choosy can we just buy from the forecourt and drive away or do we have to wait for paperwork to clear. Although it will mainly be a cash purchase we have been advised to get 5% or so on credit to get us some australia credit history, if we do that how long does it take?...
Many thanks

Not sure but let us know how you get on as we will be doing the exact same thing in a couple of months. We are looking at a car rental for two weeks to give us some time to find a bargain

You could always give these a try if you're still looking at the rental option..have a look at the 'to buy or rent bit' to compare...

they seem reasonably cheap but as always check the small-print

We're not putting anything on credit over here so not sure what difference it would make if you borrowed money against the car.

As we are coming debt free it would be nice to think we don't need to have a credit rating.. but with possibly needing a small mortgage and the emergancy credit card we need to start somewhere.!! I suppose!

As soemone said earlier head for the Mooroka mile (on Ipswich road) and you will have the choice of dozens of car yards. You should be able to find something on that stretch of road in your price range.
If you are paying cash you should be able to take the car away on the day but if using credit that may complicate things. I dont know for sure as we paid cash.

I got someone to look at it, and got it working yesterday, but not sure if it is a 100% job. The correct parts are not available for a few days. So in 30 minutes, I will be trying to start it, and see if I can get it to them
