Business investment in Vic slumps

Business investment in Victoria slumped again in the December quarter, adding to the state's economic slowdown and suggesting that this week's national accounts could bring more bad news.
On top of earlier data showing that total spending in Victoria grew just 2.8 per cent in the year to September, compared with 4.5 per cent nationally, recent figures suggest Victoria will again lag behind when the December accounts come out on Wednesday.
Figures just released by the Bureau of Statistics show seasonally adjusted business investment in Victoria fell by 3.8 per cent in the December quarter, the third decline in four quarters, while rising 3.9 per cent in the rest of Australia. Even on smoothed trend figures, business investment rose 11 per cent nationally in 2003, but just 0.8 per cent in Victoria.
