Building cost increases & lack of skilled labour
Interesting article regarding increased building cost adding up to an additional $11,000 to the price of a new house build.

Gosh I wish that extra $11K was reflected in hubby's wage pack!!!!! He's a self employed contractor (Carpenter) working in the domestic housing market.
2007/2008 he earned less than he did the previous year and it cost him more than double to run the business. Fuel costs have had a massive impact on his outgoings.

Agree. Tradies wages are falling due to a massive influx of trade workers to australia and now the building industry is in decline. Courier mail today had just 12 carpenters jobs and about 9 bricklayers, a year ago that would have been half a page of each.
As for price increases, nothing new there in one two year period about 2003/4 roofing materials went up 17 times, copper went up every week.
