Spot on. One of australias worst social experiments if ever there was one:eek: Medical profession, churches and welfare groups have pointed that out since day 1.

Budget, no comment yet :D but I agree with amazulus concerns, if yer ass hanging out yer trousers, you are probably going to be stuffed tomorrow.

Hosptial system and priv health, worried about that knowing the reality of it, sons op which can only be done by state specialist is panning out to 2 years wait time and it urgent for his development:curse: A surge of people giving up private ins is not going to help anyone:blink:

Working families, that phrase is so overdone now, I keep expecting someones fist to punch rudd in the gobb everytime he says it

Roll on 7.30 its going to be interesting thats for sure.

Re: budget tomorrow..

The population of the Western world is ageing - not so in the 3rd World.
As our population ages, there will be less young people to do the work that supports the economy and ageing population.
We need more young people.
If these young people do not come from within the Western world they will have to come from somewhere else, ie the 3rd World.
As the West takes in more young 3rd World people, the prosperity, culture, religion etc that has been built up over centuries will be diluted and ultimately, overrun and destroyed. It's starting to happen a bit already.
The baby bonus is a good thing because it encourages population growth. Sure, it's abused by some people but overall it's definitely a benefit to Australia.

And as *those* "new" workers age, we need *more* "new" workers to supp........... and so it goes on

That, Im afraid, is the logic of the madhouse.

"Support the economy": you mean "grow the economy"? But that's exactly what's caused the overpopulation and what will make the world uninhabitable - IMO within a very small number of years.

i dont think it encourages anyone to breed
if someone thinks that $5K is worth having a baby for then they are nuts
we got the baby bonus last year, it came in handy as it covered some of my earnings whilst I was off
i dont see why it should be means tested, it's supposed to be a thank you from the government for providing another future tax payer to offset the ageing population....

Fact; As the population in the Western world stagnates the population of the 3rd world is growing. Whether it fits in with Western, liberal, eco thinking or not.

Not my problem then.

It's not "them and us" it's "us". If you really think the planet's population can carry on increasing indefinitely - regardless of where the extra mouths are born - then I feel sorry for your children. Not the grandchildren though.

It is 'them' and not 'us'. Always has been, always will be. 21m or 31m or 41m people in Australia are not going to make a difference when you have 1b+ populations in China and India and rapidly growing populations in the 3rd world. We can afford population growth. Many other countries cannot.

How do you propose reducing the World population? War? Genocide? Dieback? Advancing medicine, emerging countries growing, global economy etc are ensuring that the world population will continue to grow. We just have to try and manage it better, ie better ways to produce food, better energy economy, finding new energy sources, better health systems and education etc.

Basically, there is no way of reducing world population short of killing billions of people.

Yep. $5K bonus is a brilliant idea. Pity it's not going to be for everyone now.

Bugger, are they going to be means-testing it?! Off to have a google for the details now as the $5k was a pretty tempting thing (we were planning to have another baby anyway but decided to wait until we had PR so we were entitled to the baby bonus... seemed daft, financially, to have one before then LOL)

The threshold for means testing has not been announced so you might still be okay. I'm sure we'll find out later this afternoon.

Me too, thats why it's called that Plasma TV bonus.

They would give it you over a long period of time, 2-3 years for example.
Or give it out as nappy vouchers.

I hadn't realised the Budget wasn't announced until this evening - I think I assumed that it would be announced during the day.

Ah well, at least we'll be entitled to some of the Family Tax Benefit doo-dah once we're PR... the Baby Bonus would be a nice "bonus" though. I know that it's intended to be instead of maternity pay, and as I don't work (outside the home ;-) ) then it would be a great perk.

PS good luck to your missus themerlin

I think they have started to do this for certain 'sections' of the population.

Environment, Arts

The Budget forecasts a $12.9 billion spend over ten years to alleviate the effects of the drought and secure water supplies.

There is also $2.2 billion allocated over five years for the 'Caring for our Country' program which integrates natural resource management.

Households will be able to apply for 'green loans' to help reduce greenhouse emissions, as part of environmental measures in the federal Budget.

[...]

The loans will be paid back at the maximum rate of 2 per cent of annual gross income, with a minimum of $300 per year.

The Treasurer, Wayne Swan, says the program is expected to cost $300 million over five years; the first loans are expected to become available early next year.

The Government will establish a resale royalty scheme for visual artists.

All of us over West will wait to hear a "thank you" from the eastern states for the mining boom and resulting healthy economy

Hopefully we'll be a bit better of with the tax threshold.... our annual income is less than $90K combined so any little helps
