Broadband Techy Question: Broadband speed and Modem
Hello,
I have supposidly had my Broadband speed increased this morning from 256 to 512. The modem still says it's working at 256 and I have done a speed test that seems to confirm this.
Do I need a new modem to cope with the higher speed?
I've done a search previously and again this morning and there is nothing to suggest that DSL modems have speed limits (like dial-up modems).
Thanks for any help.
Alistair

Have you powercycled the modem.. e.g. turn it off an on again.
Have you got the latest film ware for your modem?
Go to the manfactures site for your modem and check the specs for it.
Have your BB provider tell you what speed you are getting.
Thats really not a great speed, is it cheap?
Are you out in the country or with telstra!?

I've not checked the firmware. I'll go and have a look.
When I looked at the specs I couldn't see any restriction, but I thought I might be missing something. I have an Alcatel USB Modem (the one that looks like a stingray).
I suspect the BB povider has not yet upgraded the speed, they tend to drag their heels when doing stuff. I think I'll give then until tomorrow and then give them a call.
I don't really need a big speed; I upgraded to get a better download limit. The plan is 512k (128k uplink) and 12,000MB for $40/month.
Thanks for your help.

Re: Broadband Techy Question: Broadband speed and Modem
I was on 256 and upped it to 512 and couldn't tell the difference, so have got it to go faster now and am now waiting for my line to be switched back on, have moved house and have been told it will take 3 months to sort me out.
Bloody dial up now.

I'm now on the higher speed. The speed difference is making me dizzy at the moment. Will probably get used to it by tomorrow.
Thanks for all the help.

Someone brought the green guide into work last week (from the Melbourne paper).
This had a thing about broadband speed in Australia and how Telstra was ripping everybody off. It recommends various things to improve speed.

It also recommended a website for testing your speed.
