Broadband

We will be moving into our first rental in the next few weeks. Can anyone recommend a good broadband deal, whether standalone or tied in with home phone or mobile. Does it work the same as the UK? We have been using prepaid Telstra in our temp accommodation but this is proving quite costly.

Any help much appreciated.
Thanks

Re: Broadband

It's horrendous. Far more expensive than the UK, and stupid penalties for exceeding miserable little quotas.

If you enjoy being hung from the ceiling by your fingernails and beaten savagely with a large heavy stick, you'll love Australian broadband.

Re: Broadband

if you dont need a home phone and dont want to pay line rental go for whats called a naked adsl plan. You will not have any costs other than the plan itself.

I would recomend either iinet who I am with at the minute, plans are good but support is terrible like most isp, or internode who also have good plans excellent support but are not avaliable everywhere.

The packages here are a hell of a lot more expensive and you get far less but its mainly due to the distributed nature of the population compared to the UK rather than any rip off type thing.

I agree, internet access is another racket in Oz.....slow.....expensive.....paying for uploads and downloads..... One good community service though is McDonalds has free wifi, and some townships now putting wifi.

Chicken or the egg, Australians do not unnderstand the importance of fast cheap accessible internet, till they experience it.....never watch tv again :)

Here in Budapest I can access a free fast public hotspot signal from my flat :)

How would you know? You've been living in the UK for the last 5 years, taking advantage of the really low cost of broadband.

But... You are dead right.

Actually, if Telstra are involved it's very much a rip-off thing.

Because that's how it was when I lived in Australia more than 5 years ago, and that's how it was when I visited Australia 3 years ago, and my family & friends advise me that nothing has changed since then.

Of course I am.

I am with internode on a pay monthly (no contract), Naked (no phone etc) ADSL2+ (24Mbit). I wasn't sure how much bandwidth I was gonna use so went for 10Gb per month for now which can be changed at any time. Internode do not count the uploads towards your 10Gb like other isp's do.

I thought Dodo were dead! :D

Actually i've heard a lot of bad things about them. The whirlpool forums are a good place to find out all you need to know about techy stuff.
