The Australian: Surge in British, skilled migrants

"...New Immigration Department figures reveal an extraordinary spike in the total number of migrants from Britain and Ireland settling in Australia in the past two years, with the numbers jumping from 8749 in 2001-02 to 18,272 in 2003-04..."

Anyone know the numbers that want to immigrate to OZ but were rejected?
How many would immigrate to OZ if there was no immigration restrictions.

The next thing you know there will thousands of Pom boat people washing up on the shores of Northern Australia. We might have to send in the SAS to turn all the boats back

If you look at the official statistics it comes out at a figure of about 25% that return, but even then, a lot of them stay for over 20 years before going back

However, I also did a Poll on here a few weeks back, asking what the Migrants were planning, and only about 70% said "Yes" to: "I was moving permanently to Australia"

Interesting. Must be hard going back after 20+ years, the place has changed a hell of a lot in that time and not for the better. Wonder how many of those returning had not been to Oz before making the move (always gets me that one!)

Funny things is that I was one of those that returned to the UK after 10 years And I had been here a few times on Holiday before I migrated.

But i'm back here again now, and that's what counts (And yes, I did notice changes in the UK.)

These are the figures I was able to calculate from the Official Statistics:

When defined against the number of Migrants actually arriving:

3.8% Stayed Under 1 year
4.9% Stayed 1-3 years
3.7% 3-5 years
3.2% 5-10 years
4.4% 10-20 years
4.9% 20 or more years
0.1% Unstated

So, working from that, almost 4 out of every hundred of you arriving this year will go back next year, with another 5 the following year etc...
