British Shop CLOSING DOWN this week

:(Hi

Just incase anyone on the Gold Coast wants to stock up on supplies the British Shop at Robina Town Centre is closing down this Thursday - there is 20% off all of the food items (some things are reduced by more than this) and other gift items are greatly reduced. They have a good selection of sweets and jars and tins.
Will be sorry to see it go!!

Suzy

There must be or the said shop would have done a roaring trade and would not have had to close down. :)

People can appreciate the new tastes/products in their new country AND still hanker after the odd packet of bisto or jar of marmite. You'll see any number of South African, Kiwi, Ozzie, Indian, Pakistani, West African, Caribbean stores supplying expats/immigrants from those countries in the UK. It doesn't have to be either/or does it?

Sometimes there are things that just happen to taste damned good and just aren't made the same way in your new country. Sometimes they're not made at all!

Try buying piccalili or chow chow in Perth for instance. It's all that shitless nasty 'sweet mustard pickles' I used to be able to get cross&blackwells picalilli but now I'm finding it impossible to locate. Coles and woolies appear to have stopped stocking it. Can't even find it at IGA!

And being a Kiwi, there is nothing like L&P and Moro bars and Snifters.

Got a surprise the other day, as Coles have started to stock Helman's mayonaise on their normal shelves with the other Aussie Mayo's (yuck!) They used to have an 'English section' but I see that has now gone :(

I dangeld the fish hooks and caught a big one

My cousin is polish in the uk, he has bought a deli in cheshire and sells polish food.
he laughs as he is doing roaring trade.
but stuff like mayo and ketchup is just badged up in polish, and he knows its the same crap just a falicy that it is from poland.

I find UK food on the whole, balnd and normal, and some restaurants around the UK need fining for trade descriptions act, especially in the "tiger prawn" front

I am surprised its closed down though as i thought it was a success, all these types of place are around the world...

Helman's is good. So is a yank one called S&W they sell in woolies and the Heinz ones. I've got an aussie one in the fridge at the moment that's not too bad but some are gross. I think it's not too bad cos it's a whole egg mayo and they tend to be creamier.

Annoying that they removed the English section. I quite liked jaffa cakes and jacobs cream crackers etc

It's probably to do with its location. Many have less disposable income now due to mortgage and rental rises and cuts in pay, so the little luxuries you can get by without are usually the first to go. Might have been better if it had been in a different location.

maybe its more to do with the fact that the lady who runs it is in her early sixties and has been here sice 1968
time for a rest perhaps ;)

Well that would be a valid point. Pity though she didn't get a buyer to take over and keep it running as it is. These sort of shops are great for little treats.

But not all westernised countries eat the same thing and not all Asian countries eat the same thing! There are thousands of Italian delis all over the world used by many different nationalities, every city I've ever been in there has been a chinese supermarket. Just because it's a British shop doesn't mean it's only frequented by British people.
