Default British Passports Expiring in Aus?

Hi all,

Can anyone tell what needs to be done when a British Passport expires in Australia, (as ours will in 2 years time.) How do we renew it and what happens with the visa in the old one?

Thanks,

Chris.

Chris,

You can either send in your new passport to the Department of Immigration for a replacement visa to be affixed, or take both your old and new passports with you when you travel overseas.

Or even better - apply for Aussie citizenship after you've lived in Australia for a couple of years as permanent residents and then the visa issue becomes irrelevant as you'll have an Aussie passport.

Best regards.

Maybe not useful for you but maybe for others - we went to the post office before we came and got the Passport renewal forms, we are on a 457 and may need them renewed before we get back to the UK, this way we have the stuff to post off - even if we courier them back to family in the UK first at least the forms are filled out correctly. Making sure we are not travelling in between times!! Then we can get the visas changed over.

Hi All,

When you are in Australia and need to renew your passports do you need to send them to the UK or can you send them to the British High Commission over there, if so where abouts is it?

Many Thanks

Susan

And as for how to obtain a British passport in Australia, you need to apply to the
British High Commission in Canada. http://www.uk.emb.gov.au

We'll assume "Canada" was a typo or a rabid spell checker.

Rob It was the result of one part of the mind being focused on another topic at
the time

Hi Chris,

No problems.

My wife's UK passport expired 1 year after arriving. All you do is download the
application forms the UK consulate in Canberra, fill it in, and send it off (with the
necessary attached documents, payment, and old passport). If everything's in order
they usually send a new passport within 4 weeks (but they will quote a longer wait
time to you). Your permanent residence visa will be in the old passport so they
*mutilate it* (i.e. the clip off the top RH corner of the front cover) and send it
back to you. If you decide to become a citizen the permanent visa is no longer
effective so there is no need to travel around with the old passport - you'll need to
get an Oz passport to return to Oz.

Also, I have had 2 children (boys) whilst living here and they both now have UK
passports. To date I have found the UK consulate to be pretty fast and efficient.

When you need to travel just make sure you give yourself enough time for the new
passport to be issued.

Hope this helps, AndyH.

My wife's expired too, so we sent the old passport and form off to Canberra ... expecting the visa to be transferred... but they leave it in the old one and ask you to travel with both. The annoying thing is the cost of the new passport is $158 = around £61.... whereas if you had sent it back to England and given your parent's address it would have been just £30. Remember we're thinking in $$$ out here, so that's a whopping extra $81 for no benefit!
Our citizenship ceremony is in July, so then we'll have to get OZ passports... which will relieve us of another 2x $144 and 3x$72 for the kids, on top of the original 2 x $140 citizenship fees!
Cheers
