Default British Passport to Cost GBP85

The British passport is expected to increase in price to GBP85 by 2007:
http://politics.guardian.co.uk/homea...342061,00.html

While on the subject of passport costs, a more welcome announcement has come from the Passport Service that British citizen passports will be free for all those born on or before 2 September 1929:
http://www.passports.gov.uk/press_131004.asp

It is not clear yet whether this concession will also apply to British citizen passports issued overseas, or if it will apply to UK passports issued to other categories of British national, such as British subjects and British Nationals (Overseas).

Just as I am looking at renewing my daughters UK passport

With a childs first 5 year UK passport, can it still be extended Free of charge for another 5 years, even though it has expired (Oct 2002), and we are in Australia ?
I have a price of $95 to get a 5 year renewal on it.

I didn't realise you could get a new child's passport like that in the UK, but it seems you are correct provided the passport was issued before 26 March 1998.

It's not clear whether it's possible to get this service from the British High Commission in Canberra.

Why not just get her an Australian passport?

The new fee kicks in in 2007 - if you apply now it won't affect you, this time at least.

She has an Oz one aswell, but i'd like to keep her British one going aswell (she got it in 1997).

I couldn't make it out from the Canberra website either, but I have a feeling it may only be, if its done in the UK.

I just checked, and her OZ one has run out aswell, in Nov 2003 !! More expense

What a scam: seeing as they introduced compulsory child passports in Sep 1998.

There's also a good chance that within the near future, British passports will have a maximum validity of five years.

This has been adopted by Canada for many years, and New Zealand is planning to follow suit in 2005.

A five year replacement cycle is considered more secure and allows security enhancements to be implemented more quickly.

Presumably, though, if this were to happen, the cost of a passport would also be reduced - not to half, of course, but to something less. Or would they retain the same fee to cover increased costs of administering 5-yearly renewals?

If I get an Aussie passport, do I need to keep the British one updated to visit the folks back in the UK?

Will I have any problems visiting friends in France (if I don't keep the British one up to date)?

Cheers
Alistair
