Default British electrical goods - using them in Oz with travel adaptors?

Just wondering if there are any Brits in Oz who took over U.K. leccy good and have been working them off travel adaptors since.

My U.K. to Oz adaptors state on them NOT to use with earthed appliances, but wondering if anyone on here have been doing just this. It's just that we have a good hoover we want to take with us (couldn't have imagined when I was 19 that I would have ever make a statement like that!)

Also, has anyone cheated, and used a U.K. 4 way socket plugged into a travel adaptor, so they can run a few U.K. applianced at once.

(Waiting for electricians to tell me I am being dangerously dumb )

Can you use a UK 4 way extention lead but change the plug to an ozzie one?

Just change the plugs. You can buy them in Bunnings. I don't like to use adaptors as they don't fit into the sockets very well & have a 'loose' connection.

All our stuff came over and initially was plugged in to a multi socket which was then plugged into an adapter. Everything worked fine, but we did quite quickly cut all the uk plugs off and put Aus ones on. They still work fine. We still have one multi socket board with our phone chargers plugged into because we can't change those plugs but the board now has an Aus plug on it.

That Aussie wife of mine!

She told me that you couldn't buy plugs over there, that all Oz leccy goods came with sealed plugs on them, and since they don't have fuses, don't need opening or changing.

I'll let her off, she hasn't live there permanently since 1993!

Thanks for all your replies folks. That's solved a few things in my head.

(Getting ready for Crown coming next Tuesday).

She's right about the Aussie appliances being supplied with sealed plugs but as others are saying you cut your UK plug off and put the wires you strip back into an Aussie plug which you can buy. There aren't fuses in the plugs, the fuses and fuse wire are in the ah fuse box which you'll find in every property.

I'm sure I read on here that you had to get a sparky in to change your plugs or your house insurance could be void

With some of the 'DO NOT use with earthed appliances' travel adaptors you may find that the live and neutral wires are swapped around. This meant that my washing machine would not work (although it appeared to have power) - it also meant the frame of the washing machine was live. The washing machine worked fine once there was an Aussie plug fitted.

PS: The 4-way socket idea is a good one - particularly for computers, music/TV/video set-ups and power tools (for the occasional domestic user).
