British Airways miles (now Avios)
I know this won't apply to many of you, as I think you are not supposed to have any if you are resident in Australia, but I was rereading an old post when BS mentioned she had loads of (as they then were) BA miles.
Not sure how widely known this is, but BA miles can be used for internal flights in Australia with Qantas and the shorter hops particularly are very good value indeed.
For example (amounts are for one way) - random examples (in economy):
SYD - MEL : 4,500
SYD - HBA : 4,500
ADL - PER : 10,000
BNE - MEL : 7,500
PER - BNE : 12,500
and no tax to pay.

Yup, I have me eye on this. I'd geberally rather fly Virgin but booking with a bit of notice this can be very good value for thing like Fri / Sun evening flights which are typically very expensive. Buying Avios out right could work well and they sometimes have bonuses.
There ARE taxes to pay though, just no Avios + cash options like there are for some routes.

Re: British Airways miles (now Avios)
How is Avios working?
We have over 20,000 airmiles not ba miles - does anyone know the exchange rate for avios - i also heard youcould use for one way flights - 20000 would have got 2 adults uk- oz return so would that get me 4 singles ?!?
Any ideas or do i need to hunt out my airmiles password?

The bad news is Airmiles bookings were completely free I think - with Avios you're going to have to pay the taxes & fuel surcharges.

I did have a lot of BA airmiles. But I just blew them on first class BA back to Blighty next year. I was having a lot of trouble spending them, looks like it would have kept me in domestic flights for years which would have been no bad thing.

Re: British Airways miles (now Avios)
We used some of our 280,000 BA miles a month or so back to book 2 flights from Melbourne to Perth for a long weekend. Booking via Qantas was $1100, booking the same flights via the BA website was a massive faff, but only ended up costing us £31
Need to log in and see how many Avios points they've converted into, could be useful !!

BA miles converted 1:1 to Avios. But the number of Avios you need for Qantas domestic flights is much lower than it used to be in BA miles...well on the shorter flights anyway...MEL-PER probably not so much.

That's good to hear, think we've still got 180,000 odd to use up. Should get us a few flights round Oz
