The drive from Sydney airport into the city is shocking. For people first arriving it must be a real shock.
What a lot of people say "take the harbor out of Sydney and your left with a shithole" certainly rings true for me.

Brisbane may be younger and smaller but it puts Sydney to shame.....

As opposed to driving in from Brisbane Airport through the roadwork fiasco

What's that gotta do with anything ?????? It's by far a more pleasant drive than the drive into Sydney from the airport.

The roadworks once finished will improve everything vastly...maybe the NSW government should take a look at what's happening up here eh ?

Is the new toll road still being built - didn't the company go under a few years ago or something?

The new gateway bridge opened awhile ago now, one bridge northbound, one bridge southbound. I think it was finished ages before scheduled......

There is also the Clem 7 tunnel which connects north and south sides of the river. Whether or not you agree with toll roads, they have made a massive difference to travel times.

Was talking about the airport link toll road, not Clem 7 or gateway. Soon Brisbane will have more toll roads than Sydney.

Brisbane is not far behind though - something like 8 toll roads in Sydney, and once construction is completed in Brisbane (on Airport Link and Legacy Way) there'll be 6 toll roads there. Melbourne has 2.

Yep its still in progress. The north busway opens next week throwing inner northside commuting into chaos with somne routes changed, some renumbered and some (like mine) just hanging in the ether, and the airport link construction is still ongoing.

What about weather? I'm sitting in Europe working on a Visa but doing alot of research in the meantime. Brisbane seems to have better weather than Sydney.

Yup Sydney definitely is seasonal. Its cold here now and the housing insulation is sh1te. We're moving to Brisbane next yr and looking forward to the warmth

Each city has its ups and downs though. In my opinion if you can afford to live near the beach in Sydney go for it. If you can't...

Major cities in Australia without surf beaches:

Adelaide (no surf in Gulf of St Vincent)
Brisbane (no surf in Moreton Bay)
Melbourne (no surf in Port Philip Bay)
Canberra (no surf on Lake Burley Griffin)
Perth (no surf on Swan River)

Eh? I will be a big critic of Sydney but what you on about the drive from the airport. It's 20 mins, freeway the whole way. It may get a bit jammed in rush hour but it's perfectly pleasent compared to other cities of similar size or bigger around the world.
