& Cairns! You'll need a campsite unless you want to sleep in a layby. According to my road atlas it's 1940KM, and figure on averaging 50 - 60Kph. The road from Brisbane to Cairns is mainly like old-style A roads, the road to Sydney is worse or so I've been told.

Actual driving time Brisbane to Sydney has taken us 15 hours, down the coast road, and a totally mind blowingly boring 22 hours of dust and dead animals down the Western route. (Actual driving time not with stops.) Only advantage I could see to the Out west way was the roads were pretty good and not much traffic. Tourists stick to the Coast road. Stick to the speed limits, speed cameras everywhere.
Plenty of places to camp, you will need caravan parks but they are placed all over the joint and quite cheap. Tourist attractions range from nice beaches, (make sure they are safe before you swim tho), scenic drive bits and the great horror of Australia the collection of Big Bananas, prawns, sheep etc.
(Big 4 caravan parks/ Top Tourist Parks usually clean and reasonable)
Traffic gets pretty scary once you get into Sydney tho, horrendous traffic jams, make sure you dont arrive in a camper van, lost in the rush hour, like I did. People were so abusive I actually thougt we would get shot or something talk about road rage.

Hi,
Don't think the big 4 sites sites take pets. We will have to do the sydney trip to pick the dog up but am sure we will be able to find plenty of alternatives for the way back.
