Re: Brisbane State High
There is snobbery, amongst a minority, relating to renters.
But it's a minority, and those who do it are usually wannabe status seekers. I think the only time being a renter might go against you is if you try to obtain credit. Always easier as a home owner. |

I keep hearing about a form of snobbery that goes on in Australia and I've heard people get looked down at if they rent, is this true?
I hope I never meet anyone like that, God help them if I do!:sneaky::D The only snobbery that I've detected here (though my radar might just be picking up static :o) is private versus public schooling snobbery. Lots of parents seem to feel the need to go private and the more exclusive the "name" of the school the better - never mind if lots of the kids there behave like tw*ts and the ATAR score is crap. The private and posh sounding school seems to be all that matters. The herd mentality combined with high levels of disposable income, I suppose. |

I've not noticed that yet but then I live in Canberra which is one of the most evenly middle class parts of Australia and people tend to be transient here due to military or government postings meaning a lot of people rent while they're in Canberra and then move on.

As much as I don't like the fact that it goes on, from a personal point of view it wouldn't bother me as I'm not the type of person to let it, or even give status seeker types my time.

Mine went to a private school and some of the kids there were, imo, some of the most vicious and disgusting people I've ever encountered.
I wasn't really fussed on some of the teachers either. Here in England my experience with private schools has only been positive, the kids have been great and friendly and the teachers are in a league of their own. My husband said ( the sceptic ) 'of course the teachers are going to be good, helpful, polite and all the rest of it, it's a business and they're doing what they're getting paid for'. But for you that obviously wasn't the case. Did you take your children out? If not how did they fair exam wise? |
Re: Brisbane State High
Molly: I too was thinking that the snobbery might be more of a poms in Australia thing. I'm certain there's lots of exceptions but I find Aussies to mostly be positive, unassuming and non-judgmental. Snobbery à la UK is rare in Aus. :)
Brissy: Maybe more people choose private schools here because they can afford to and their perception is private education is always better? An observation that I've found interesting is while a large proportion of parents are willing to stump up the dosh to get their kids through private schooling, they aren't so generous when uni fees are concerned. Even families that are doing very well indeed seem to insist on their kids self-funding through the great HECS system that we have here. |
Re: Brisbane State High
Paul, most Aussies I have met are pretty down to earth I must admit.
They love to have a bit of banter too and take the piss out of us, I like that. And I like giving it back twice as hard.:sneaky: ;) |
