Family of 3 (2 adults and a 2 year old) , 2 main outgoings query.
Is this enough to budget for a month?
Food (shops only not eating out) & Cleaning/Toiletries - $1,000
Spending Money (1 date night, 1 or 2 family days out a month, clothes, hair cuts,) - $800

We all spend different amounts on these things. It doesn't matter what anyone else on BE spends, it matters what you spend. What would you spend in UK in GBP on same things, then we can tell you if it compares well.

Hi,
Yeah I can imagine people spend different amounts but just looking for a guide and maybe hopefully some families share their amounts, just really looking to see if Im in the right average figures or way under
In the uk we spend -
Food (shops only not eating out) & Cleaning/Toiletries - £450-500
Spending Money (1 date night, 1 or 2 family days out a month, clothes, hair cuts,) - £500

Re: Brisbane Food and Cash budget?
Thanks
I know we spend more than we should in the UK and some months we do have £100-200 left over on spending money, but we are never over the £500, food we defiantly spend too much on in the uk but if we needed to we could cut back £50-100, the money is there so we don't budget as much.
Things would be tighter for these 2 spendings in Oz for us so if we compared these too £400 and £400 would that be more comparable
On the lowest salaries we would hope to achieve in Oz the budget is $1000 and $800 so if it means cutting back then we have to, to live within our means.
I would still like to hear from some other families and there spendings on these 2 outgoings

You seem to be looking for a right answer still, there is no right answer and what other people do is not relevant. For you, your $ budgets will mean cutting back versus what you are used to. This is all you need to know.
To show you how pointless comparing is, we are a family of two adults so same as you minus a two year old. I assume they don't eat that much. We would probably spend about that on food, we would spend many times more than you have indicated for your other stuff.

Thanks, but I would still like families to respond, but thanks for your opinions anyway.
Before Children we would also spend even more because the money was there and you spent what you wanted, now we spend what we can life within. Yes we spend more than we should, because sometimes we buy what we want as its a luxury but not essential, and the money we sometimes waste at the shops could be saved.

I think I am entitled to ask if any families out there would like to share, as you have the right to have your opinion also.
So again thanks for sharing your thoughts and advice.

You know what Neil, I'm sure someone will be along at some point and share their outgoings with you. just keep asking.
Also I think people will live to their means, if you earn a lot, then you'll spend a lot etc... I wouldn't worry too much, if you want to make it work, I'm sure you will.

Re: Brisbane Food and Cash budget?
We are just north of Sydney, not Brisbane - but the cost are about the same. We have one 11 year old daughter and our weekly groceries spend is $250 per week, about $200 at Aldi for general stuff and $50 at local butchers / bakers.
We go out once a week for a nice dinner at an average restaurant locally, and we also have one lads/girls night each per month. We buy most our everyday clothes from cheaper department stores. Our monthly spend is about $700. If we shopped at David Jones, had weekly manicures and ate in expensive Sydney restaurants it would be double that amount.
As others have said it depends on your lifestyle, but the budget you have offered up for comment will certainly keep you fed and watered, and looking presentable.
The other stuff, electricity, running a car, school fees, etc.etc. are what will hit you the hardest.

Re: Brisbane Food and Cash budget?
Thanks for your spending amounts.
I actually just did an online shop at coles similar to a shop that I'd do in the UK for a week, to cover 7 days breakfast, Lunches and Dinners no thrills...not including your household staples like tea, coffee, dried herbs etc, and no cleaning or toiletries and the total was $230.
My $1000 budget is looking tight, as you said it would get you by. I'd have to go through it to see what products were the highest and if there was a cheaper alternative that would suit, but no doubt about it, it would need managed well.
I have gathered some budgets for findings and research that you quoted above and I have budgeted monthly $90 electricity, $200 running 1 car, $100 a day nursery (with child rebate and benefit towards nursery it reduces it quite well)

Re: Brisbane Food and Cash budget?
Hi Neil,
As a single person who tries to stick to a no frills budget, I spend on average $175 per week on food/groceries (incl. laundry detergent, toilet rolls, bleach etc.). I make cheap meals (stir fries, spag bol, roasts, curries etc.) but it adds up.
To add another adult and 2 kids would increase my meat and fruit/veg spends significantly - and processed food is even more expensive if the kids fancy crisps, choccie or snacks.
I run a car each month for;
Fuel - $165 per month (work 14km from home and do some driving for work)
Registration - $56.25 per month ($675 paid annually)
RACQ Roadside assistance - $15 ($165 paid annually)
Insurance (Mitsubishi Lancer 4L) - $37.50 ($450 paid annually)
Servicing (newish car) - $20.83 - (about $250 per year)
So my car costs me $294.58 each month and that doesn't include new tyres (every 4 years maybe), licence ($95 every 5 years?). I am also a 'light' user (10,000km - 12,500km per year), so if your commute is more than increase the fuel costs and possibly the servicing costs too.
I also think your electric is a bit low - I'm out of the house (2 bed unit, 1 occupant) all day (7am - 6pm on average) every weekday and most of the weekend and my electric is hugely below average at $85 per month!
Best of luck with it all!

Re: Brisbane Food and Cash budget?
Not been here long - 1 adult, 1 adult teen in Adelaide
Food budget rarely goes over $100 week for just the two of us, but was up around $250 when I had daughter, SIL and grandson over for December.
Going out, clothes, haircuts, etc - probably similar amount.

Thanks for the replies.
Hopefully our family of 3 will be ok with the figures we have, these are based on lowest estimated incomes so fingers crossed.
