Default Brisbane: can you assist?

Hi - first apologies for the lenght of this post!

My partner has been offered a medical job in Brisbane and
we have just received sponsorship approval.
We are about to send off for our 457/1066 visa. We will rent our house out.

Do you mind seeing if you can answer the following questions
we have? I'll say thanks in appreciation.
By the way your threads are really entertaining
- all of you are!

Visa - how long will it take to get , hospital expect us to be there in feb/march new year.

Whats the deal with getting PR & then citizenship? Do we need to wait before we can apply for this.

Brisbane -

Public transport - my train was late again and over crowded this morning , buses here are scruffy and packed in rush hour.
whats the PT system in Brisbane like?

Local govt jobs - I work in Local govt at a managerial level but would be happy to take what I could get in Brisbane.
Does Local govt take on poms & would it be worth applying from over here?
Apart from sick leave and the holidays , what else is same / different -I have 37 hour week flexitime 7.30am - 7.00pm?

Suburbs - Initially we would want to rent in Herston , near the hospital , is it and immediate surround an okay place?
I'm thinking manchester here where MRoyal Infirm is next to Moss Side and Rusholme.

Cars - why are cars so expensive? ones I've seen for about $6000 , 180000K, 10 years old - are older cars just looked after better or is the standard of care the same as UK? Most cars here are under $3000 at that age.

Driving License - I've been driving 18 years , do I need to retake my test there?

Cinema - what does it cost for a ticket?
Taxi - from city centre bar to home 8/10 mile away how much ?

Weather - is the heat and humidity less, similar or more than say orlando florida in aug/sept?

Can I watch the premiership games?
Can I get broadband?

Holidays- what do you do for holidays travel in Aus to Sydney , Gt Barrier etc, or is it affordable to go to NZ and Hong Kong?

Just like to say thanks again , not far to go now! (he lied)

Whats LAFHTA or whatever it is?

Friends - do you make them if your outgoing and friendly?
Is it easier to link up with ex brits if you need that kind of mutual suppport or just for friends? (not being blinkered here honest). me 36 she 28 years old.

Are the mossies bad? or will spraying body like you do in the med work?

What time does it get light and dark during the year. I take it there's no long light summer nights?

What it like if I want to cycle to work and for play both day and night?

Can you get Hollands pies and mushy peas or do I have to import them ? Saying that though they don't even have them down south - don't even know what a chip barm is!

I've got a load more things to ask and would love to speak to anyone in Brisbane who doesn't mind me picking their brains or all Aus for that matter. Email me.

I bet Pommie Bastard would give a bit of his brain?

Anyway thanks for any answers.

its also cool to see that we all have the same responses to anything as life changing as this. Seeing how you all respond and assist each other has made me quite proud to be part of the human race. Was that a little to patronising sorry but i did mean it!

hope I've not bored you to much.

cheers S

Brisbane has a fairly good PT system. Buses and trains are clean and tidy.
Plain clothes police ride on trains at night as a deterrent to would-be
troublemakers.

    > Driving License - I've been driving 18 years , do I need to retake my
    > test there?
Not 100% sure, but I think now you may only have to take the written part of
the test.
    > Cinema - what does it cost for a ticket?
Around $12.00 for an adult ticket at one of the big main chains of cinemas,
much cheaper at the independant cinemas - check out "Balmoral Cinemas" at
Bulimba and Hawthorn, ticket prices are around half that of the others.

    > Weather - is the heat and humidity less, similar or more than say
    > orlando florida in aug/sept?
Only through December to February - rest of the year, beautiful!
    > Can I watch the premiership games?
Of course! Aussies Rules or Rugby League? ;-)

    > Can I get broadband?
Yep - for internet.
    > Holidays- what do you do for holidays travel in Aus to Sydney , Gt
    > Barrier etc, or is it affordable to go to NZ and Hong Kong?
So many attractions on our doorstep, most people travel away within
Queensland.

    > Friends - do you make them if your outgoing and friendly?
Aussies are great, especially Queenslanders - so easy-going. We have made so
many Aussie friends in the last 18 months.

See last point - initially (first couple of months) you may feel the need to
gravitate towards other expats for support and to share stories of your
migration, but as you settle in, you get past that.

    > Are the mossies bad? or will spraying body like you do in the med work?
Mossie and midgies can be a nuisance in the warmer weather, especially if
you live near fairly stagnant water, i.e. creeks and coastal mangroves.

    > no long light summer nights?

Forget twilight - you don't get it here, because you're closer to the
equator. At the moment it's dark around 6 pm.

Herston and next door Kelvin Grove are fine- upmarket, suitable for DINK's
and Doctors!

Some have said that it's because of less rust (no salt on roads).

    > Driving License - I've been driving 18 years , do I need to retake my

Switch within 3mths and you only need do written.

    > Cinema - what does it cost for a ticket?

    > Taxi - from city centre bar to home 8/10 mile away how much ?

Hang on- Herston is almost staggering distance from the bars! Well, not
really, but a 5 minute drive. Haven't caught a taxi in years, but it
wouldn't be much - $15?

    > Holidays- what do you do for holidays travel in Aus to Sydney , Gt
    > Barrier etc, or is it affordable to go to NZ and Hong Kong?

NZ for skiing. Cheap packages to Hong Kong, NZ, Singapore, Thailand, etc.
Or stay in Queensland and rent an apartment at the Gold or Sunshine Coasts
for a couple of weeks.

Make sure your house is fly-screened. Nothing worse than trying to sleep
with a mozzie in the room, dive bombing you!

    > What it like if I want to cycle to work and for play both day and night?

Next to the hospital is a golf course. Around the golf course is a newly
built bike path. No idea where it goes to, but probably somehow links to the
city.

Tins of mushy peas available. What are Hollands pies?
If you really want a treat, go to Adelaide, where you may purchase a pie
floater.
(pie floating upside down in pea soup?)
