There is a Formule One hotel (same as the ones you get in France) right outside the airport. I think a room is about $60/night. They are pretty basic but very clean & the beds are ok.

if you fancy spoiling yourselves a little, I'm sure the Marriott in Queen Street does things like mid-week specials and then you're right in the thick of it. Don't use the Astor in Whickham St - it's a sh*t hole

Definitely not plush, we stayed in the one in Sydney & it is very very basic, not even a phone in the room , but at $60/night its pretty cheap &, as you said, OK to just lay your head (which is what we wanted to do, between arriving at 10pm & leaving on 6am flight the next day .

If you want to actually see the city, I would be more inclined to pay a little more and get something in town. There is the rendezvous hotel just opposite the central station or the Sofitel right next to the central station as well as a couple of others nearby. The advantage of one near the station is that you can save on taxi fares and come in from the airport on the train.

Cheers,

DagBoy

We've stayed there.. it's definately not plush in any sense of the word!! It's cheap, clean and that's about all I can say about it.. the receptionist must've won 'The Most Miserable Receptionist of 2005' award.. had a face like a bulldog licking p*ss off a stinging nettle and a gammy eye... But we only stayed there one night... My side of the bed was ok but ChopperBoys was about 2 foot lower! But frankly what do you want for £25?!

It's ok for one night.. any more than that and I'd consider spending a bit more!
