Brisbane
Were are due to arrive in Brisbane in September as my wife is due to study for two years at Moreton TAFE – Bayside Campus.
We plan to buy a home so can anybody recommend any districts surrounding the campus that will allow her to commute a sensible distance(either by car or public transport).
We will have approx A$325k to spend, what are we likely to get for that sort of money suitable for two young kids. Also is it possible to buy acreage and build in the area.
We have a trip planned in April to look around at schools etc as our son has learning difficulties.
Many thanks
Lloyd

A quick glance at the Moreton TAFE website shows three campuses Wynum, Mt Gravatt and Bayside (Alexandra Hills)
Now Mt Gravatt and Wynum are a fair distance apart ... (on a bicycle that is). Wynum is coastal (on the Bay rather than on the Ocean), Mt Gravatt is south of Brisbane on the Pacific Motorway and ...
I haven't quite figured out exactly where Alexandra Hills (Bayside) is yet ... OK here it is ... a golf ball's distance from Birkdale. http://www.alexhillss.qld.edu.au/location.htm
Here's a suburb guide http://www.ourbrisbane.com/brisbane/...urbs/index.htm
So at Alexandra Hills you're not exactly on the Bay but you're not too far off it. Birkdale has a train station en-route to Brisbane http://www.qr.com.au/ and it falls within reach of Brisbane City Council bus zone http://www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/getti...us_zones.shtml
Myself I'd say you could commute there BY CAR from any coastal suburb south of the river from Wynum to Cleveland or from the City itself or even from north of the Brisbane river via the Gateway Toll Bridge.
There seems to be plenty of new housing developments across that whole zone, many less than ten years old. Probably more on the cards.
If I were you wife I'd request some info from Moreton TAFE itself on access to the college by public transport.

I've heard a lot of people say the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast are nice. Trouble is I have no idea how far they are from Brisbane. Do people commute or is it too far???

Hi nick333
I am out that way in april with the tribe in tow to visit family and have a look around, it would be good if we could share some findings.
My wife is a learning support assistant in U.K and would be interested to see if such jobs are available over there and if so in what sort of role. She helps kids with all sorts of difficulties at work so if she finds the same sort of work prospects in Brisbane then we will let you know.
My cousin is in real estate in Brisbane so should be able to answer most of my questions which include the ones you have just posted. I know that April is a long way to wait and I don't know how long you have until you leave blighty, but if any of the answers are any good then they should be worth waiting for.

Hi,
The Bayside Campus is, I believe, the one in Alex Hills. $325,000 will buy you a reasonable house in this area, but you probably wouldn`t get a very big block or a pool.
The area is good - low crime, fairly reasonable shopping at Capalaba (next suburb to Alex Hills), and the other suburbs on the bay, e.g. Wellington Point, Victoria Point etc. are also very nice, however you wouldn`t get so much value for money in property by the bay. (Plots of land at Wellington Point are selling for around $850,000 for 650sqm).
The schools around here are also good - some better than others, I understand, like everywhere.
My two go to Hilliards State Primary, which is in Alex Hills, and is regarded by the `locals` as the best state primary in the bayside area. From what I can gather they do try and help children with special needs more than some of the schools around here - you could try contacting the Principal, Bernie O`Brien for more info.
Coolnwynpin Primary is also considered reasonable and is not too far from Alex Hills.
Alex Hills High does not, however, have a great reputation, perhaps because it is such an enormous school. Having said that, it is far better than Capalaba High or many of the other state high schools.
Many people here send their children to private education for secondary education anyway.

The Sunshine Coast to the North of Brisbane runs from Caloundra to Noosa, Caloundra is about a 100 Km see http://www.nowwhereroute.com/scripts..._Caloundra_QLD
Noosa's about 150 Km see http://www.nowwhereroute.com/scripts..._QLD_Noosa_QLD
The Gold Coast to the South of Brisbane runs from lets say Southport to Coolangatta.
Southport's about 80 Km see http://www.nowwhereroute.com/scripts..._Southport_QLD
and Coolangatta is about 100 Km see http://www.nowwhereroute.com/scripts...oolangatta_QLD
You could commute from the Gold Caost by Electric Train but you would need to allow say 1.5 Hrs each way. From the Sunshine Coast you'd need to do it by car. Both places are easy to reach at the weekends.
Another option to the North would be Bribie Island at about 80 Km see http://www.nowwhereroute.com/scripts...QLD_Woorim_QLD
